Information Required for Course Summary

A number of NCATE standards relate directly to the use of multiple instructional strategies, integration of technology, use of a variety of assessments, and coverage of issues related to diversity. To facilitate the Board of Examiners' access to evidence relative to these standards, a course summary will be developed for each of the courses in initial and advanced preparation programs. As specified by NCATE, the course summary must include the information listed below. The Course Summary should be presented in tabular form. A Model is provided for your reference.

  1. Course Prefix, Number, Title, and Number of Credits
  2. Course Description (taken from the University catalog)
  3. Targeted Standards (for courses in the undergraduate professional education program, the Standards for Beginning Teachers (INTASC, etc.) must be listed; for courses in advanced educator preparation programs, the targeted standards for Advanced Professionals (NBPTS, etc.) or specialty area standards must be listed)
  4. Course Objectives (specific learning outcomes for students that are aligned with targeted standards)
  5. Instructional Strategies (list of the types of instructional styrategies used in the course; for example: large group discussion, group projects, lecture, laboratory exercises,etc. Remember, the Board of Examiners is looking for evidence of the use of a wide variety of instructional strategies)
  6. Integration of Technology (brief description of the use of technology in the delivery of the course; for example: powerpoint slides, e-mail assignments, distance learning, WebCT, etc.)
  7. Types of Assessment (assessment methods used to assess student performance; for example: paper-pencil tests of knowledge, performance tasks, teaching artifacts, etc.)
  8. Diversity Issues (list of diversity issues addressed in the course)

Opportunities for Reflection (list of assignments, activities. etc. which facilitate reflection on professional practice by students)
