January 9 SUU Student Talent ShowcaseCome and see a sampling of talent from the students at Southern Utah University. Students from the Music, Theatre and Dance Departments, Ballroom Dance Company, Acclamation, Forensics Team, ROTC, Power 91, Athletic Department, and Bagpipe Band will share their talents and skills with the campus and community to kick off this semester's Convocation Series.
January 16 "Who Was Martin Luther King?"Mr. Barrows' powerful one-man show tells the evolution of the civil rights movement and Dr. Martin Luther King's place in it. The show required six years of research and is a combination of anecdotes, traditional history, obscure facts, and colorful characterizations. Mr. Barrows, has been performing the original play since 1988. He has appeared at colleges and educational institutions, churches, libraries, and museums across the United States.

January 23 "My Heart is Too Full": Southern Utah and the Legacy of Mountain Meadow"Will Bagley, a Utah native, is a man of many talents, His column, History Matters, has appeared every Sunday since July 2000 in The Salt Lake Tribune. He has worked as a country musician, journeyman, carpenter and public speaker and is recognized as an award-winning writer, editor, and publisher. He has served as a consultant for National Geographic magazine, the National Park Service, and several documentary films and won the Mormon History Associations "Best Article of the Year" award in 1997. Today he works in Salt Lake City as a full-time writer and historian, with projects including Mormon-Indian relations and the Oregon-California Trail.

January 30 "Wildlife of Southern Utah"Lynn Chamberlain has been photographing the great outdoors for more than 20 years. An interest in nature and photography prompted him to earn four year degrees in biology from Southern Utah University and photography from Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara. His photo credits include many books, calendars and magazines. He has also done photographic work for the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, State Fish and Game Agencies and other organizations. Employed by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resource, Lynn is also managing editor of Wild Light, an on-line magazine and is the host for the "Photo Tips" section of a television program called "Utah Wild."

February 6 "Beyond the Dream"Andre Minkins is an actor, director, producer, writer, and the founder of the theatrical touring company, 7AM Productions. Since receiving his Master's of Fine Arts degree from the University of NC-Greensboro in 1987, Mr. Minkins has taught in the school system of North Carolina, as well as at the University of Arkansas. While teaching, he also worked with poetry groups and nationally touring theatrical productions. For the past ten years, he has produced intriguing entertainment based on diversity and culturally specific topics with 7AM Productions.

February 13 This performance is where Whose Line is it Anyway? meets Saturday Night Live! For over 30 years, Chicago based "Second City" has taken its unique brand of improv-based comedy on the road, performing all over the world. The Second City has been the springboard for generations of the best and brightest in the comedy world. Second City alumni include: Alan Alda, Joan Rivers, John Belushi, Bill Murray, John Candy, Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, Martin Short, George Wendt, Bonnie Hunt, Mike Myers, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Ryan Stiles, Chris Farley, and more.

February 20 "The Magic and Meaning of Coincidence"Carol Lynn Pearson has been a professional writer and performer for thirty-five years. Her poems are published in Ann Landers' column, Chicken Soup for the Soul, and various college literary textbooks. Her autobiography, Goodbye, I Love You, tells the story of her marriage to a homosexual man, their divorce, and her caring for him as he died of AIDS. She has written numerous educational motion pictures, including the well known Cipher in the Snow. Since 1989 she has been performing her one-woman play, Mother Wove the Morning, and recently released her newest book, Consider the Butterfly - Transforming Your Life Through Meaningful Coincidence. Ms. Pearson is the mother of four grown children and lives in Walnut Creek, California.

February 27 The Sean Curran Company was formed in 1997 by dancer and choreographer Sean Curran, a graduate and guest faculty member of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. The Company has performed throughout the world and has been commissioned for new works of dance by Central Park Summer stage (2000), the Joyce Theater (2001, 1999), Dance Theater Workshop (1998), Danspace Project (2000, 1997), and Celebrate Brooklyn (1997). The Company received national recognition with the August 1999 National Dance Project co-commission at the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. During its existence, the Company has received grants from the New York State Council on the Art, Arts International's Fund for US Artists, and the Phillip Morris Companies.

March 6 "Weaving the Web of Spider Woman"Now in her 19th year at Dixie State College, Lena Judee is a full-blooded Navajo who grew up in Pinon, Arizona. Her upbringing was very traditional, raised by a medicine man father and a mother with no formal educational experience. Lena attended Brigham Young University where she was active in both Lamanite Generation and Young Ambassadors. After studying voice performance, she became a professional country singer and formed her own touring band. tiring of the life of an entertainer, she served a volunteer mission in Milan, Italy and completed her education at Northern Arizona University before joining the staff at Dixie.

March 20 "Why Are We So Lonely?"Dr. Impey is a University Distinguished Professor at the University of Arizona, and Deputy Department Head of Astronomy. He has authored over 120 astronomy research papers and has had 15 projects approved with the Hubble Space Telescope. he has won nine University of Arizona teaching grants and awards. For five years, he was the Associate Director of the NASA Arizona Space Grant. Last year, he was one of the six people nationwide chosen as an NSF Distinguished Teaching Scholar, and he was selected as the Arizona Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

March 27 "Looking Beyond the Tartan: Perceptions of Scotland in the 21st Century"Southern Utah University will celebrate her Scottish roots and consider the homeland of many of the school's founding families. Professor Gittings is a faculty member at University of Edinburgh where he directs their Master's Program in Geographical Information Science (GIS). Gittings is the co-editor of the "Gazetteer for Scotland" web site and is laboring to produce a vast geographical database, featuring details of towns, villages, bens and glens from the Scottish borders to the Northern Isles. The SUU Scarlet and Black Highlander Bagpipe Band will also perform at the convocation.

April 3 "Ladies to the Rescue: Creation of Mesa Verde National Park"Dr. Smith has served for more than 35 years as a faculty member at Fort Lewis College. He is one of the most decorated professors in Colorado. His classed on Colorado and Civil War history are among the most popular at the college. He has also written or edited more than 25 books and dozens of articles in professional journals. Dr. Smith has been the recipient of Fort Lewis College's "outstanding teacher" award and was chosen by the senior class to be their commencement speaker in 1993. In addition to his scholarly pursuits, he is very active in civic affairs in the Durango area.

April 10 "Inviting Success in Your Life, Personally and Professionally"An active writer, lecturer, and researcher, Dr. Purkey's interest is inviting people to realize their potential. He is the co-founder of the International Alliance for Invitational Education. Purkey has authored and co-authored over 80 professional articles and nine books, including Inviting School Success, Invitational Counseling and What Students Say to Themselves: Internal Dialogue and School Success. His professional experience includes public school teacher, an Explosive Ordinance Disposal Specialist in the U.S. Air Force, and an award-winning university professor.

April 17 "The New Nuclear Danger"For the last 25 years, world-renowned antinuclear activist Dr. Helen Caldicott has devoted her efforts to an international campaign educating the public about medical hazards of the nuclear age and the necessary changes needed to stop environmental destruction. She warns of the enormous dangers inherent in allowing weapons manufacturers to dictate foreign policy and how the merger of weapons producing firms in the 1980's created powerful "death merchants," corporations that lobby politicians and manipulate public opinion to forward their own interests.

April 24 "Secrets of the Human DNA"Dr. Bryan Sykes has taught Human Genetics at the University of Oxford since 1997. He has also served as a Research Fellow and Lecturer at the Institute of Molecular Medicine at Oxford. In 1998, Dr. Sykes was presented the Carter Medal from the British Society for Human Genetics and now serves as a member of their Public Affairs Committee. He is the author of over a hundred original publications in the area of medical genetics and, more recently, genetics applied to archaeology and human evolution. His visit to Southern Utah University is sponsored by the Grace A. Tanner Foundation.
