Southern Utah University’s Educational Talent Search Program (ETS) will host its third annual Freeze Your Buns 5K Fun Run for Scholarships on Saturday, January 28, setting the stage for what organizers anticipate will be another successful — albeit frigid — fundraiser aimed at generating funds to help send local high school seniors to college.
A rare winter race opportunity for southern Utah runners, the Freeze Your Buns Run has fast become a crowd favorite and includes a 5K race and one-mile walk amidst one of the area’s most beautiful settings. The course will begin at Cobble Crest Park in Kanarraville and provide scenic views of the surrounding red rock mountains.
Competitors from years past have given the route and atmosphere surrounding the race rave reviews as a fun opportunity to stay in shape during the winter months. Beyond the physical benefits of the race to individual participants, the Freeze Your Buns Run does much for local youth residents who will begin college this year. All money raised from the race will benefit local high school seniors who participate in the Federal TRiO Program. Using race-generated funds, these students will be granted scholarships to the college of their choice in the fall of 2012.
TRiO is an educational outreach program to assist students from disadvantaged backgrounds in their pursuit of a higher education. For just a few dollars and a bit of shivering, southern Utah race enthusiasts have the opportunity to make a lasting impact on young students.
Race registration is available online at raceit.com, keyword ”Kanarraville”. You may also print and mail a hard-copy registration form through suu.edu/ss/talent.
Runners interested in receiving a commemorative Freeze Your Buns Run t-shirt and goodie bag should register no later than Sunday, January 15, though registration will remain open through the morning of race day.
Pre-registration for the 2011 Freeze Your Buns Run is $20 for adults and $15 for children aged 10 years and under. Registration fees jump to $30 for run-day registration; again, interested participants are encouraged to register in advance.
