Who needs snow when you can make ice?
Though this winter’s weather has proven itself mild to date, this coming weekend, students and members of the community have the rare opportunity for an outdoor winter classic when Southern Utah University’s Student Activities Board (STAB) brings ice skating to Cedar City in the parking lot of the University’s physical education building this Friday and Saturday.
Without a dedicated skating rink across all of southern Utah, this weekend’s lot-turned-rink is expected to be a huge draw for winter fun enthusiasts across the region.
The rink will first open in the late afternoon of Friday, January 20, exclusively for SUU students, to kick off a weekend of campus activities that include a gymnastics meet against Brigham Young University Friday and a Basketball Tailgate on Ice Saturday evening, followed by the SUU vs. IPFW men’s game. The Saturday tailgate will run from 5–7:30 p.m.
Student-only skating will be open from 3–9 p.m. Friday evening.
The fun will then open for everyone, with community skating from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 21.
Ice skate rental will be included with the price of admission, and skaters will be treated to complimentary hot chocolate. Admission is $5 for students with a current SUU I.D. and $8 per person for the general public.
Additionally, patrons are encouraged to bring non-perishable food donations to help SUU’s student-athletes take first place in the annual Summit League Food Fight, a service competition for the 11 universities within the Summit League Athletic Conference. All food collected will be donated to the Iron County Care and Share.
To allay any misconstrued imaginings of college antics that involve a flooded parking lot in the name of fun, STAB has contracted with an outside professional company that uses paneled synthetic ice to transform any surface into a safe place for skating. The rink in the P.E. Building parking lot this weekend will measure 40 x 100 feet.
