Southern Utah University’s Michael O. Leavitt Center will present an informational session on the Utahns for Ethical Government ballot initiative and the Fair Boundaries initiative on Tuesday, February 23, at 5:30 p.m. in the Whiting Room of the Hunter Conference Center. The speakers will be Doug Hall, Iron County representative for UEG, and Curtis Haring, Director of Operations for Fair Boundaries.
The UEG ballot initiative will establish a non-partisan citizen ethics commission and a strict code of conduct to govern the ethical behavior of Utah legislators. The intent of the initiative is to ensure that legislators apply high standards of ethical conduct and represent the interests of the citizenry rather than catering to narrower special interests. For a variety of reasons, it is difficult for the Utah State Legislature to discipline its own members, so citizens will be able to help the Legislature by creating a fair and open process for reviewing complaints of ethical violations by legislators. More information is available on the UEG website: www.utahethics.org.
The Fair Boundaries initiative will define an honorable and open transparent process for redistricting in Utah. It will establish an eleven-member independent commission with no more than four members from the same political party and three unaffiliated, and exclude individuals with obvious conflicts of interest. The initiative will also set anti-gerrymandering standards and keep local communities intact. More information is available on the initiative website: www.fairboundaries.org.
The Michael O. Leavitt Center for Politics & Public Service is a non-partisan, interdisciplinary organization at Southern Utah University dedicated to preparing students to serve as responsible and educated leaders in a democratic society. The center oversees a large public education program to inform citizens about political and governmental issues and topics. More information about the Leavitt Center is available online.
