Name: Jennifer Burt
Formal Statement from Wes Curtis, former VP for Government Relations & Regional services:
Dear Campus Community,
On December 10, 2010, I made a terrible mistake that has caused pain and embarrassment to many. What I did was wrong, and I am full of shame and deeply sorrowful for my inexcusable behavior. Today I entered a guilty plea before the Justice Court. I take complete responsibility for what I did, and I am willing to fully accept the consequences – legal and otherwise – for my wrong-doings. To that end, I have also submitted my resignation to Southern Utah University.
My actions have hurt and betrayed a great number of people. First, and foremost, I have betrayed the love and trust of my wife and my children. I have also betrayed and disappointed my colleagues and associates at Southern Utah University, and brought painful embarrassment upon that esteemed institution.
To all of these, and to many other friends and associates throughout the state – and particularly to the students of SUU – I offer my deepest and most sincere apologies. I cannot possibly express how sorry and full of regret I am.
Nothing is more important to me right now than to make things right with my wife, my family, and my God. I have caused much heartache to those I love, and I will do everything within my power to reclaim their trust.
For me the journey ahead will be difficult and full of challenges. I am currently seeking and receiving professional and spiritual help to face and repair my faults and to heal the relationships that are so important to my life. Though it’s more than I dare ask, I sincerely hope and pray that all of those whom I’ve offended and disappointed by my actions can someday find it in their hearts to forgive me.
Formal Statement from SUU President Michael Benson:
Given Wes Curtis’ personal circumstances and his desire to make a full recovery from a very challenging situation, I hereby accept his resignation from Southern Utah University.
Wes is, and will always remain, a very good friend and extremely capable colleague. It is very difficult to part ways with him at this time given his many years of valuable and loyal service.
As a University family, we are saddened to see the pain and damage his actions have caused and want him to know that we care about him deeply as an individual and friend. We all hope for a full and complete recovery and wish him, his wife and family, nothing but the best moving forward.
It will be extremely difficult to replace the many contributions Wes has made to Southern Utah University and rural Utah. We will try our best to fill the holes in the short term that Wes’ departure has created with various alternatives and personnel.
