Name: Anne Smith, OES coordinator
Southern Utah University is proud to sponsor a series of weekly one-hour sessions presented by outdoor experts designed to highlight outdoor opportunities and information. The Outdoor Education Series (OES) is a community outreach program that will include topics ranging from learning how to capture dynamic outdoor images with an Emmy Award winning videographer, to birds of prey, southern Utah’s hidden secrets and to nature’s dance. Presenters include SUU faculty and staff as well as a variety of other experts in outdoor related fields.
Admission is free to all sessions. Sessions have run for the past three weeks and will continue weekly through April 21 on Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. at the SUU Outdoor Center.
Additionally, a special Saturday OHV/ATV ride with the Utah State Parks at Curly Hollow will be offered Saturday, April 9. Transportation and ATV provided, but space is very limited, and pre-registration is necessary. See the schedule for details.
Two other sessions will be jointly offered with the Biology Seminar Series highlighting climate change on the Colorado Plateau as well as the Utah prairie dog recovery program. The lecture and activity series will also complement the current SUU Convocations schedule.
Such opportunities for students, faculty, staff and the local community are well aligned with a primary institutional goal at SUU of increasing outdoor experience. Anne Smith, OES Coordinator, organizes the Outdoor Education Series, which runs each semester, to improve access to outdoor information and opportunities for all.
SUU seeks to take advantage of its location among scenic state and national parks, monuments and public lands. Over the past few years SUU has developed its SUU Outdoors program, built the Challenge Course, began to offer the four-year degree in Outdoor Recreation in Parks and Tourism, installed an indoor climbing wall and offered many outdoor student and community activities and opportunities.
The complete Spring 2011 OES schedule is available online (link below).
The Outdoor Education Series is sponsored by The Outdoor Recreation in Parks and Tourism program (ORPT), The College of Humanities & Social Sciences and SUU Convocations.
