Attention all English majors: Looking for a little inspiration?
SUU’s English Department will host its inaugural English Career Development Workshop on Wednesday, September 7, at 3 p.m. in the Zion A and B conference rooms within the Sharwan Smith Center.
And according to Mette Holden, a senior English and Spanish dual major integral in developing the workshop, there are most likely quite a few English majors out there who could use just such a resource.
Holden explained that she has noticed a general consensus of insecurity among her peers about the next step after graduation with an English degree. And so Holden set out to help, working with her professors and advisors to create a workshop dedicated solely to the broad range of career and graduate school options available to those with an undergraduate degree in English.
“There are many positions out there well-suited to English majors,” Holden said. “We want to help our majors know their options.”
English Department student representative Bethany Hardy, a junior English major, said the Department is excited to implement this workshop and hopes it becomes an annual event to help direct students in their studies.
“We hope that this workshop will make the process of looking forward to graduate school and entering the job field less intimidating,” Hardy said. “We just want to show English majors that there is a breadth of possibilities.”
The workshop will be divided into three parts: career and professional development, followed by a panel of SUU English Alumni who will discuss their professional successes and the paths that led them there, and concluding with a question and answer session with published English faculty members who will field queries about the publishing process.
“Anyone who is unsure about what they want to do after they graduate should come to get more information,” Holden encouraged. “Even people who are undeclared and simply considering a major in English would benefit from the workshop because they would leave with a better perspective of their potential future.”
