The Washington, D.C. Chapter of the SUU Alumni Association hosted a reception September 26, 2006, to honor alumnus Mike Leavitt, who currently serves as Secretary of Health and Human Services. More than 150 guests gathered in the Caucus Room of the Senate Russell Building to hear from Secretary Leavitt and his wife Jackie, an alumna of SUU. The reception was also a time to nationally recognize the Leavitt Center for Politics and its quest to create internship opportunities for SUU students in the Washington, D.C. area.
SUU Interim-President Greg Stauffer and Dean of Library Services Diana Graff were both in attendance and briefed the gathering about Southern Utah University, the Center for Politics, and the addition of the Leavitt Collection to the SUU Sherratt Library.
We were also honored to have SUU alumnus and current Nevada Senator Harry Reid attend. Other distinguished guests included Utah Senator Orrin Hatch, Utah Congressman Rob Bishop, Utah Republican Chairman Joe Cannon and United States Army Band trumpeter Andrew Allphin, who played the National Anthem. Provost Abe Harraf, Assistant to the President Wes Curtis and Advancement Officer Jeff Fisher also represented the University at the reception.
The DC Chapter wishes to thank all SUU Alumni who attended, as well as alumni from our sister institutions Utah Valley State College, Utah State University, Brigham Young University, and the University of Utah.
