Distinguished alumni to be honored at banquet
Every year at Homecoming, the Alumni Association sponsors the Alumni
Banquet, at which SUU honors individuals who have positively impacted
the well-being of the University community. Four Alumni Distinguished
Service awards and one Outstanding Alumni award are
presented. This year's banquet is on September 28 in the Great Hall in
the Hunter Conference Center. Activities will begin with a casual reception
in the Whiting Room at 5 p.m. Dinner willfollow at 6 p.m. The recipients
for the Alumni Distinguished Service Awards are Gary Giles ('57, Accounting);
York Jones ('47, Engineering) and Evelyn Kunz Jones ('46, '76 Music);
and Fred Esplin ('71, Communication). Gary Giles taught accounting and
business administration at SUU for 34 years before retiringin 1999. He
also served stints as chair within the department. He was named educator
of the year in 1979 and 1999. Fred Esplin is the vice president of university

relations at the University of Utah, and former general manager of KUED
Channel 7 in Salt Lake City. York Jones, a native of Cedar City, was named
after the WWI hero, Sergeant York. After serving in the next World War,
he attended BAC. York had a 33-year career with Utah International Construction
Company. He has been invited on several occasions to lecture senior business
management students. He has been honored for his authoritative stance
as a his torian. He and Evelyn were given the 1982 "For Years of
Historical Research" award. Incidentally, York's grandfather, Lehi

was one of the individuals who mortgaged their homes in order to get
enough money to operate the fir st year of Branch Normal School in 1897.
Evelyn was also born and raised in Cedar City. She graduated from BAC
and SUSC with degrees in music, physical education and business. She taught
music at SUU for 20 years, and is one of the founders of the Orchestra
of Southern Utah. Walter M. Gibson ('51, Gen. Ed.) has been selected to
receive the Outstanding Alum Award. This award acknowledges an alum who
has dedicated and distinguished himself in a chosen profession. Since
leaving BAC, Walter has established a long and distinguished career as
an

internationallyrecognized researcher in physics. Dr. Gibson, a native
of Enoch, Utah, received his associate degree from BAC, and a bachelor's
degree in chemistry from the University of Utah. Walter ismarried to Alice,
whom he met in Denmark. The couple has seven children and 15 grandchildren,
one of whom attends SUU. Tickets to the Banquet are $15/person and mustbe

Fifty year club welcomes the class of '51 at this
year's Homecoming
A long-cherished tradition will once again return to SUU when the Fifty-Year
Club meets this Homecoming, September 28, to welcome the Class of 1951
into this most elite club of alumni of Branch Normal College and Branch
Agricultural College. Activities are slated to begin with a Social Hour
at 10 a.m. in the Whiting Room in the Hunter Conference Center. A luncheon
and short program will follow at 11 a.m. in the Great Hall. The Fifty
Year Club is pleased to have Walter Gibson ('51, Gen. Ed.), of Vorheesville,
N.Y., as the speaker. Since leaving BAC, Walter has established a long
and successful career as an internationallyrecognized researcher in physics.
He is sure to delight classmates with his comments on the adventures of
his career, as well as memories from time on campus. The cost for the
luncheon is $10 per person. Please make your reservations with the Alumni
