GRADUATES/STUDENTS

Richard J. Thompson, '39 died in May. He attended BAC in the fall of 1939. He later received a bachelor 's from Kutztown University and a master's degree from Pennsylvania State University. He taught at Weatherly High School in Pennsylvania, the Chemical Warfare School at Ft. McClellan, Ala., and in Guam. He served in the Army in World War II.

Sherman D. Lamb, mid '40s, passed away on June 20. He had been in the hospital 18 months after being struck by a car while in his motorized wheelchair. He was born in Cedar City on July 9, 1924. He attended BAC for one year before entering the Air Force during World War II. He flew a B-24 Bomber and completed 20 missions behind enemy lines before VE Day. He graduated from Stanford University and received his MBA in the School of Business. He worked with Richard M. Nixon on the Hess Spy Investigation and then worked under the secretary of s tate until 1960 when he was accepted into Geor ge Washington University Medical School.

Daniel Garth Webster, late '40s, passed away June 12, following complications from surgery. He was born July 16, 1925 in Cedar City to Daniel Urie and Rhoda Palmer Webster. He married Dolores DeMille in 1948. He was a veteran of WWII. After returning home he attended BAC. He worked for U.S. Steel for 25 years as a mining engineer, then for Utah International in Cedar City and Farmington, N.M., until his retirement in 1986.

Robert D. Osborn, '49-'50, BAC, passed away May 24 from hear t failure. He was born Feb. 6, 1930, in Glendale,Calif. He attended Beaver County schools and graduated from Beaver High as the student body president. He married Iris Grif fith in 1950. Robert was well respected for his community service. He helped organize what is now the Springville Little League Football. He also helped bring the WBBA Little League World Series to Springville in 1967.

Louise Adams, '50, passed away on July 12. She was born Oct. 3, 1939, in Panguitch to Reed Samuel & Nita Lee Henderson. She married Nathan Calvin Adams Christmas Day 1923. Louise graduated from BAC in 1950. She worked for the telephone company for more than 30 year s before retiring. She is survived by her son Ronald Adams of Cedar City, his wife, Michal Ann, and four grandchildren-John, James, Jason and Jaclyn Adams.

Rachel Hunt, BAC, passed away May 25, at age 73, af ter a long illness with Parkinson's Disease. She was born July 31, 1927, in Minersville, to Elmer Herbert and Effie Lucille Hutchings Marshall. She graduated from Milford High School and attended BAC for one year. After college, she served a mission in Texas where she met her husband, Clinton J. Hunt. The couple made home in Cedar City. Rachel worked for several places including Hill Air Force Base.

Dan Pattison, '68, passed away May 9, after a long battle with myelofibrosis at age 56. A native of Magna, he graduated from Cyprus High School in 1962. He then attended CSU while working at the Deseret News. Upon graduation in 1968, he continued at the News on the sports staff, full-time until 1976, and continued contributing stories thereafter. He also worked as a sports journalist for the Las Vegas Sun and the Salt Lake Tribune. He was awarded the ABA Sportswriter of the Year in 1971 and 1974, and was a fivetime nominee for Utah Sportswriter of the Year. He was the founder of the State of Utah Basketball Hall of Fame, a charity that has raised nearly $100,000 for victims of sudden trauma accidents. Steven Lunt, SUU physical education department chair emeritus, attributes Pattison for coining the phrase the "coaching factory" of SUU.

Dennis Jones, early '70s, recently passed away in a highway accident. He was from Blanding. While at SUU, he played basketball.

James W. "Jim" Smith, '79, passed away June 5, at his home at age 45. He was born April 9, 1956, in Panguitch, to James W. and Rae Woolsey Smith of Henrieville. He married Margo Gates in 1976. He graduated from Br yce Valley High School in 1974 and received his deg ree from SUSC in 1979. He spent the las t 20 years coaching and teaching at Escalante High School.

David Edward Harrison, '77-'81, SUSC, died of a heart attack at age 45 on April 11. He was born Dec. 11, 1955, in Lincoln, Neb. A commercial bus driver, he is survived by his daughter, Chandra, of California; mother, Jody, and brother, Herb Pracejus, both of Las Vegas; and grandmother, Ruby Sharp of Alexandria, La.

Sherry Ellingson, CSU, died June 19, after a courageous battle with Lou Gehrig's disease at age 53. She was born in Cedar City on Aug. 7, 1947, to Austin and Elva Ence Benson. She married Robert James Ellingson in 1969. She graduated from Cedar City High School in 1965, and attended CSU. She worked for First National We will Bank, and later for Clark County for 30 years. She retired from the Clark County Justice Department in February.

Kristy Bess, who attended SUSC for one quarter, passed away after a long battle with diabetes at age 36. She attended high school in Parowan where she was a cheerleader, a Rammette and a Tomboy. Kristy, her sweet spirit and beautiful smile, will be missed by all who knew her.

Richard Rowley, Business passed away of natural causes at age 51 on April 13. He attended elementary and high school in Parowan, graduating in 1968. He attended SUSC as a business major. He served his country for three years in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany much of that time. He married Jolynn Bennett of Delta, and has one child. His life's work was in land surveying southern Utah, southern California and N evada.

Ryan Edward Allgaier, '95, Criminal Justice and Spanish, passed away July 8, from complications resulting from a mountain biking accident in his hometown of Cedar City. He was born on Jan. 28, 1973, to Kurt and Rebecca Gilley Allgaier. After graduation from Jordan High School, he obtained a degree in criminal justice and Spanish at SUU. He worked for the Iron County Correctional Facility, where he met his closest friends, Hank, and his wife, Barbara. He enjoyed mountain biking and running, an event he took a gold medal in at the 2001 Utah Summer Games.

Ashley Henrie, SUU, passed away April 29. She was born on Oct. 30, 1979, in Provo. She graduated from Orem High School. She attended SUU. She had planned to attend the BYU Jerusalem Center this past summer. Ashley is survived by her parents, Steven and Verna Henrie, and six brothers and sisters.

FACULTY/STAFF

A. Thomas Challis, library director, age 76, passed away on July 25. He was born Feb. 20, 1925, in Salt Lake City to Arthur Daniel and Winifred Jane Wood Challis. He attended South High School in Salt Lake City and upon graduation was called into the Air Force in the Pacific, completing more than 50 missions. He received the Air Medal. Upon return from WW II, he married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Mitchell. They had five children. He was the director of the Library for SUU for 21 years. He was also appointed as University historian by President Braithwaite in 1960. He directed the plans for the Library which was constructed in 1969. He was the president of the Utah Library Association and served as a member of the Utah Library S tate Board for 12 years. Tom received his bachelor's degree in journalism and his master's degree in library science from the University of Utah.

Patrick Fenton, '77-'78, SUSC, criminal law instructor, 83, passed away on August 11. He was born on August 16, 1917, in Huntington, Utah, to Robert L. and Melita B. McAllister. He married Gloria Butler Gardner in 1948. Pat held a notable career in law and military service. He was elected district attorney twice and was appointed by President Ford as U.S. magistrate. He received a field commission directly from General Patton. Pat taught at SUSC for 35 years. He was instrumental in the behind-the-scenes lobbying for endorsement from the State in establishing SUSC as a four-year college. In '94 he was given a Distinguished Service Award for outstanding service to the University and community. Patrick is survived by Gloria, three children, nine grandchildren and nine g reatgrandchildren.

Sandra Stiglinski, Utah Shakespearean Festival, better known as "Stig" to all who knew and lover her, passed away at her home in Cedar City on June 13 at age 53. She was born to Mr. & Mrs. George Stiglinski on July 18, 1947. She was a talented costume designer, who worked for SUU in the Utah Shakespearean Festival since 1977. She loved children and was an incredible woman, with a zest for life and for travel.
