The Art & Design Department had another banner year for enrollment in 2007-08. The number of majors was up by 25 compared to last year, or a 14.6% increase. The department has seen phenomenal growth with the number
of majors increasing from 90 in 2000-01 to 196 in 2007-08, or a 118% increase. The addition of the new Photography and Graphic Design programs, along with the establishment of the BFA degree in Art, have helped boost demand for all courses in the visual arts. (Photo: SUU Ceramics student)
Thirteen of our 2008 graduating class exhibited their work in the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery from April 10 through May 3. Over 700 visitors saw an outstanding and eclectic display of art by our talented BFA students. Associate Professor Eric Brown will showcase
his large India ink drawing, Man with Guitar, at the 84th Annual Salon at the Springville Museum of Art, April 27 through July 6. Eric also led a group of students to London, Paris, Lucerne, Florence, Pisa, Siena, and Rome during Maymester, and will participate in an Oxford Roundtable in July. Professors Susan Harris and Brian Hoover
were awarded Individual Artist Services Grants in May by the Utah Arts Council. In recognition of these awards as established artists, their work will be featured in an exhibit at the Rio Grande Gallery in Salt Lake City in December. There were 47 applications submitted for the grant program in 2008. The grants were then awarded to two categories: emerging artists and established artists who were able to receive more funding.
Professor Brian Hoover was a featured artist this spring on the Beinart International Surreal Art Collective website. More information may be found at the Beinart website. Brian also had a painting accepted into “Expressions West,” a juried exhibition of Western artists that will be held at the Coos Art Museum, Coos Bay, Oregon, April 25 through July 5.
Dr. Andrew Marvick will be doing research this summer in Paris that will involve study of exhibition catalogues at the art auction house, Salle Drouot, and the Bibliothèque Nationale.
This summer, Assistant Professor Jeremias Paul will travel to Germany to begin a new body of work based on the places where he grew up. Jeremias plans to visit Munich, Erlangen, Nürnberg, Düsseldorf, and Krefeld during his trip. He will also prepare for a solo show, which will be on display December 2008 and January 2009 at the Truckee Meadows Community College's Photo/Print Gallery in Reno, Nevada.
Jeff Hanson, Assistant Professor in Graphic Design, accompanied 13 students to the state-wide American Institute of Graphic Design (AIGA) Portfolio Review held in Salt Lake City in late March. Jeff reports that four of our students presented work and nine participated in workshops on portfolio building. While in Salt Lake City, Jeff and the students visited Infinite Scale, the design firm responsible for the 2002 Olympics building graphics. This firm also created graphics for the last four NFL Super Bowl games.
Skott Chandler (photography) was the first Art & Design student to receive funding from the
Under Graduate Research and Scholarship Program (UGRASP). Skott’s grant application entitled “Photo Cubism – A Study of Time and Motion in 2-D Space” involves creating an adaptor that will allow him to take advanced motion photographs. Heath Papa, B.F.A. Studio Arts (08), has been accepted to the MFA program in Ceramics at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania with an assistantship and full tuition support.
Stephanie Watters, B.F.A. Graphic Design (08), this year’s Outstanding Graduate in Art & Design, will be attending graduate school in graphic design at Indiana University this fall.
