The Department of Art & Design continues to grow at a rapid pace. The number of majors this fall reached 181, nearly doubling what it was in the fall of 1999! The new digital computer lab is up and running and is packed at all hours of the day. A new Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History has started under the guidance of Dr. Andrew Marvick.
Arlene Braithwaite and seven art students traveled to the Escalante Canyon Art Festival in October. Students painted on location, and received instruction and advice from professional artists. Two students, Kate Montoya and Mitch Grimshaw, sold the work they created in the Plein Air Painting Competition Exhibition. Arlene won the $2,000 Grand Prize for her pastel painting “Morning Light on Calf Creek Cliffs.”
Eric Brown, just had three ancillary materials published by Prentice Hall for use with Marilyn Stokstad’s textbooks Art: A Brief History: 3rd Edition; Art: A Brief History: Instructor’s Manual; Art: A Brief History: Student Study Guide Plus, and Art: A Brief History: Test Item File. Eric also had a work accepted into the Twenty-Second Annual Religious and Spiritual Art of Utah Exhibition at the Springville Museum of Art. The show runs October 31 - December 27, 2007.
Dr. Andrew Marvick has launched a new website for his artwork. On November 9th he presented his paper, “Realist vs. Modernist Form and their Reception in the Landscapes of Fernand Khnopff” at the 49th Annual Midwest Modern Language Association’s convention in Cleveland, OH. Meanwhile his paper, “Delacroix’s Critique of Poe’s Sublime,” will be presented by his co-writer (and brother) Professor Louis Marvick (University of Nevada, Reno) in Honolulu on January 12th, 2008 at the 6th Annual Hawaii International Conference on Arts and Humanities.
Susan Harris and Brian Hoover currently have artwork on display at the Museum Gallery at
Old Main East Gallery on the campus of Northern Arizona University. The exhibition is titled “Mythical Objects Redux” and will be on display November 2nd through December 15th.
Susan Harris is currently preparing a new body of ceramic work for the upcoming exhibition, “The Objects of our Friendship,” a very large regional show of contemporary ceramic art from five Arizona, Utah, and Idaho artists. The exhibit will be hosted by the Southeast Idaho Museum of Art in Idaho Falls, and is slated to open May 15, 2008.
New faculty member Jeremias Paul, who is heading up the Photography program, traveled with nine students to the Southwest Region Conference for the Society for Photographic Education, which was being held in Tucson, AZ November 15th to 18th.
Dave Richardson delivered a multimedia presentation entitled “Write, Dance, Design: Cross Disciplinary Case Studies in Design” at the Intent/Content American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Education Conference in Nashville, TN May 31-June 2, 2007. The presentation showcased graphic design projects that were interdisciplinary and interactive collaborations between SUU’s departments of Art and Design, Theatre and Dance, and English.
