artsFUSION: MOSAICS AND MATH WITH PAUL HEATH AND DONNA PENCE
January 27, 2011: 9:30-3:30 Elementary Workshop
January 28, 2011: 9:30 to 3:30 Middle and High School Workshop
SUU Emma Eccles Jones Education Building room 105
Two mosaic workshops will address a variety of math, art, and social studies concepts adapted for various grade levels. Mosaic artists Paul Heath and Donna Pence from SLC will conduct two, full-day workshops, one for secondary and middle school and the other for elementary teachers. Teachers will learn how to design lessons that teach children how to work collaboratively and creatively while making aesthetic choices. Our goals are to connect the mosaic project with math, history and the creativity of making mosaic patterns.
On the first day, elementary teachers make mosaics using inexpensive, common materials. Use mosaics to
integrate math concepts including fractions, symmetry, reflection, rotation, and displaying data. Projects show student understanding of repetition, combining simple shapes to create complex images, and color schemes.
On the second day interested elementary and secondary teachers learn the techniques of glass and tile mosaic. Teachers use 6" x 6" pieces of both tile and glass to create their own design. Focus is on making aesthetic decisions, learning new skills, and using tools and materials safely in the studio/classroom.
