2007 All-Conference HonoreesTHUNDERBIRDS PLACE SIX ON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMSCEDAR CITY, Utah – May 24 – Southern Utah University baseball had six athletes named all-conference, including two to the first team and four to the second team. The number is a jump from last year when the Thunderbirds had only one player recorgnized with an all-conference nod. Sophomore third baseman Chester Wilson and junior utility player Joe Wright each earned first-team honors as both players hit over. 300 during conference play. Wright led the team from the plate during conference with a .400 average and a team-high seven doubles in 19 games. Wilson averaged .329 while racking up a team-high 16 RBIs and four home runs. Second-team honorees included senior catcher Cameron Nelson, freshman first baseman Bucky Aona, second baseman Keli’i Zablan and freshman starting pitcher Alec Reichle. Nelson tied Wilson for the lead in home runs (four) and RBIs (16) during the conference season and was second on the team with 65 putouts. Aona proved to be one of the best freshmen in the league, ranking second on the team in conference play in batting average (.377) and third in RBIs with 12. Zablan, a sophomore, led the Thunderbirds in hits (30), triples (two) and total bases (45) and ranked second on the team with 15 RBIs and home runs (two) in earning the second-team kudos. Reichle was a late addition to Southern Utah’s rotation and parlayed the action into a 2-2 record and a 2.92 ERA, marking the lowest ERA of any starting Thunderbird pitcher. Nelson will be the only member of those honored that will not return after having graduated in athletic training. The Thunderbirds will loose only three other seniors, bringing a wealth of experience into the 2008 season when Southern Utah enters the Summit League and the quest for the first ever Summit Championship. -SUU- |
