Mountain West, WAC and Big West Opponents Highlight 07-08 T-Bird Schedule

Orlando GriegoCEDAR CITY, Utah, Sept. 5 – The second-ever meeting with Utah State, games at Brigham Young and New Mexico and home dates with Cal State Fullerton, Boise State and Cal Poly highlight Southern Utah’s non-conference schedule this year.

First-year Thunderbird Head Coach Roger Reid said he is excited about the schedule, particularly the level of competition visiting the Centrum this season.

“This is a great schedule,” he pointed out. “We have two Big West Conference schools in Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly coming to Cedar City as well as a WAC school in Boise State. We’ll also get some challenges on the road at New Mexico and Brigham Young – a couple of Mountain West Conference opponents – and we’re excited about playing at Utah State this year.

“We always want to have a good home schedule,” Reid noted “We have a great arena and great fans and we want to provide them to be able to enjoy some good competition. We worked hard to get a good, competitive schedule this year and it’s something we will continue to work on for future schedules.”

The Thunderbirds open the season with a pair of exhibition games against teams from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, Mesa State on Oct. 31 and Adams State Nov. 2, then jump right into the fire at perennial WAC power Utah State in the regular-season opener, Nov. 9. A game at Sacramento State, Nov, 14, follows.

The T-Birds then open their home season against CS Fullerton, Nov. 17, with home contests against Cal Poly (Nov. 20), and Boise State (Nov. 24) before going back on the road for the New Mexico game, Nov. 28.

The team returns home to host Colorado-Colorado Springs, Nov. 30, then plays its first Summit League contests, Dec. 6 and 8, at IPFW and Oakland, respectively.

The Thunderbirds then host Utah Valley State, Dec. 15, before traveling to Fullerton, Calif., for a return matchup with CSUF, Dec. 17, then meet BYU in Provo Dec. 21 before taking a week off for Christmas.

In their final game before jumping fully into the Summit League schedule, the Thunderbirds travel to San Luis Obispo, Calif., to meet Cal Poly Dec. 29.

The new year will begin with a home game against Western Illinois, Jan. 3, followed by a Jan. 5 home match-up with IUPUI. SUU then goes on the road to meet UMKC on Jan. 12.

The next week the Thunderbirds take on two first-time basketball opponents, Summit League members North Dakota State and South Dakota State. SUU visits NDSU Jan. 17 and SDSU Jan. 19.

Following the trip to the Dakotas, Southern Utah returns home to host Centenary (Jan. 24) and Oral Roberts (Jan. 26), then its back on the road, at IUPUI (Jan. 31) and Western Illinois (Feb. 2) before a home game against UMKC (Feb. 9).

SUU then hosts South Dakota State (Feb. 14) and North Dakota State (Feb. 16) before the final road swing of the year, at Oral Roberts (Feb. 19) and Centenary (Feb. 21).

The Thunderbirds then close the regular season with home games against Oakland (Feb. 28) and IPFW (March 1) before traveling to Tulsa, Okla., for the Summit League championships, Feb. 8-11.
