BAUMGARTNER FINISHES THIRD AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
– Highest Finish Ever By An Individual Thunderbird In Any Sport –
11/20/06
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. Nov. 20 – Southern Utah Univeresity’s Jess Baumgartner ran the race of his life Monday to finish third overall at the 2006 NCAA Cross Country Championships and earn first-team all-American honors.
Baumgartner, a junior from Cedar City, Utah (Cedar High School) finished in 30:53.2, just behind Stanford’s Neftalem Araia at 30:52.6 and roughly eight seconds off the pace of national champion Josh Rohatinsky of BYU, who finished the muddy 10,000-meter course in 30:44.9.
“I wanted to stay with the lead pack,” Baumgartner said. “I got up front between one and 2K and was able to stay there the whole time. In the last 500 yards Josh and Neff broke off and I just tried to stay with them.”
“This is so huge it’s almost indescribable,” an elated SUU Coach Eric Houle said. “This is without a doubt the biggest individual athletic feat in the history of Southern Utah University. He’s an all-American, third in the nation, it’s just huge.
“I think this proves our entire team deserved to be here,” Houle noted. “The way our splits were [the distances between the first and fifth runners] we would have finished very well, but that aside, we’re really excited for Jess.”
Southern Utah’s team finished fourth in the Mountain West Regional race but was not selected as one of the at-large teams to compete in the championships.
This was Baumgartner’s second appearance in the NCAA championship race. The last time he ran on the national stage, Baumgartner recorded the best performance by a T-Bird at the event with a 51st-place showing, just missing out on All-America honors.
In 2000, former T-Bird Curtis Moore qualified for the NCAA championships and placed 52nd-overall, while former SUU harrier Zak James was the first T-Bird to advance to the national race in 1998, when he finished 69th-overall. SUU’s 1999 team finished 21st in the nation that year and was led by former SUU runner Jody Benson, who posted a 52nd-place finish.

T-BIRD MEN FINISH FOURTH, WOMEN 16TH, AT NCAA MOUNTAIN REGIONAL
– T-Bird Men Post Second-Best Finish in School History and Best Finish Since Winning it All in 1999 –
11/11/06
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M . - Southern Utah’s men’s cross country team posted the second-best regional finish in school history with a fourth-place showing at the 2006 NCAA Mountain Regional championships Saturday at the University of New Mexico Golf Course. Meanwhile, the SUU women closed out their season with a 16th-place result.
The Thunderbirds’ fourth-place finish fell just behind the result turned in by the 1999 Thunderbird squad, which became the first and only Utah school to win the Mountain region title. SUU may now be in line for an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships since it finished behind three nationally-ranked teams and ahead of one other, No. No. 30 Weber State.
Junior Jess Baumgartner led the T-Bird charge and earned all-region honors with seven-place time of 30:23.8 over the 10-kilometer course, which is the fourth-best individual finish by a T-Bird at a regional championship in school history, while his time just missed breaking the school record by just over one second. Baumgartner also just missed qualifying for the NCAA championship meet as an individual as he was the sixth runner from a non-automatic qualifying team to cross the line. Baumgartner may still earn a berth to the national meet, which welcomes the top-five individual runners from each race, if a individual that finished ahead of him is on a team that earns an at-large bid.
Meanwhile freshman Rex Shields recorded the best-overall finish by a T-Bird freshman at a regional with a 23rd-place time of 31:32.4, followed by junior Mark Currell who finished 30th at 31:53.3. Sophomore David Sheeran finished right behind Currell in 32nd with a 31:56.3 and freshman Adam McDonald closed SUU’s scoring in 36th position at 32:02.3.
Perennial region power No. 2 Colorado slipped by No. 14 Brigham Young to claim the men’s team championship, 59-67, while No. 4 Texas-El Paso outscored SUU for third place, 86-128. Northern Arizona (160) finished fifth, followed by Wyoming in sixth (187) and Weber State (190) in seventh. BYU’s Josh Rohatinsky won the men’s individual crown with a time of 29:51.6.
The SUU women were led by sophomore Sharla Platt, who placed 52nd-overall with a 6K time of 22:58.9. Fellow sophomore Madison Syndergaard was the next T-Bird across the line 84th-place at 23:48.5, followed by freshman Cassie Westfall in 95th at 24:12.4, freshman Lisa Tubb in 104th at 24:39.6, and freshman Kate Eborn wrapped up SUU’s scoring effort in 105th at 24:44.4.
“Our men ran fabulous today and regardless of what happens with a possible NCAA berth, this was an awesome season for us,” Head Coach Eric Houle said. “Our women ran as well as we expected with how young we are. However I expect them to get stronger as we get into the track season and we’ll be better next year.”
Ninth-ranked Colorado made a clean sweep on the day at it finished ahead of No. 17 Texas Tech, 64-87, to claim the women’s crown. Tech’s Sally Kipyego was the overall women’s winner as she posted the lone sub-20 minute time in the field at 19:45.9.
SUU’s men will find out Monday if the team or individual will move onto the NCAA Cross Country Championships, which will be held Monday, Nov. 20, on the campus of Indiana State University in Terre Haute.

T-BIRD MEN RUN PERFECT RACE AND BREAK TWO MID-CON RECORDS EN ROUTE TO CONFERENCE TITLE; WOMEN FINISH FOURTH OVERALL

Mid-Con Men's Results
Mid-Con Women's Results
LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. - Southern Utah’s men’s cross country team ran the first perfect race in Mid-Continent Conference history as all five Thunderbird scoring runners finished in spots 1-through-5 in winning the league title for the eighth time in 10 total tries Saturday morning at the Longview Cross Country Course. Meanwhile, the Thunderbird women put up a strong fight and were able to come away with a fourth-place showing overall.
The T-Bird men scored a record-low 15 points in the victory and broke another conference record for largest margin of victory of 60 points by outscoring league runner-up Oakland, 15-75. All five scoring runners also earned first team all-Mid-Con honors, led by junior Jess Baumgartner, who earned the conference athlete of the year award for the second time in as many races after he missed last year’s championships due to injury. Baumgartner won the individual title with an 8-kilometer time of 25:28.58.
Meanwhile freshman Rex Shields took home conference newcomer of the year honors as he placed second overall with a time of 26:07.25, followed closely by sophomore David Sheeran at 26:12.98, junior Shaun Vernon at 26:14.91 and freshman Adam McDonald closed SUU’s scoring with a 26:16.11.
SUU's men had also held the previous Mid-Con scoring record of 18 points which was set in 2004, while the race victory was the T-Birds' fourth of the season overall.
“These are the types of days that are really special and for our team to run to a perfect score shows the greatness of these student-athletes,” Head Coach Eric Houle, who won the conference’s coach of the year award, said. “It also says a lot about the class of the rest of the teams in the league for them to come out and cheer for us out of respect and recognize what we were able to accomplish. I’ve said that this is the strongest team we’ve ever had here, and that includes the 1999 regional championship team, and I could not be any prouder than how I am right now.”
The SUU women had two runners earn second team all-Mid-Con honors as sophomore Sharla Platt was the team’s top-finisher with an 11th-place time of 23:13.52 over the 6K course. Fellow sophomore Madison Syndergaard also earned all-league recognition as placed 14th-overall at 23:26.45, followed by freshman Cassie Westfall in 17th at 23:37.69, sophomore Nicole Torgerson in 26th at 24:20.48, and freshman Kate Eborn wrapped up SUU’s scoring effort in 29th at 24:27:74.
“All in all I was pretty pleased with our women’s effort, they ran a very good race and competed until the end,” Houle pointed out. “We put up a good fight for third place and ran like champions out there. We are a young team, but I feel that this group of ladies will get better and better with age and experience.”
Defending women’s champion Oral Roberts slipped past Valparaiso in retaining its crown, 42-45, while Oakland outscored SUU by an 85-97 count to finish third. ORU’s Diana Chelimo won the conference’s athlete of the year award with a race-winning time of 20:41.54, while Oakland’s Sara Lieblein took home newcomer of the year, and ORU’s Joe Dial was named coach of the year.
SUU will enjoy another week off to prepare for the NCAA Mountain Regional Nov. 11, hosted by the University of New Mexico, in Albuquerque, N.M. Last season the T-Bird men finished 12th, while the women placed 13th, in Provo, Utah.

CEDAR CITY - Southern Utah’s cross country teams enjoyed a strong day across the board as the Thunderbirds saw action at two different meets Saturday.
The majority of the men’s team successfully defended its home turf in claiming its third team victory of the year at the rain-soaked SUU Color Country Invitational at Cedar Ridge Golf Course, while the Thunderbird women raced a third-place team finish. Meanwhile SUU’s top-five men’s harriers ran against the nation’s best and posted strong marks in their final tune-up before the Mid-Continent Conference championships with an 18th-place team showing at the NCAA Pre-National Meet held at Indiana State University in Terre Haute.
At Cedar Ridge, the SUU men placed all five of their scorers in the top-16 overall to claim victory, led by junior Shaun Vernon who placed fourth overall with a time of 24:01.37 on the near four-and-a-half mile course. SUU tallied 34 points in outscoring Utah Valley State, which held off Idaho State, 46-47, for second place, while Westminster College finished fourth with 115 points and Dixie State College placed fifth with 130 points. UVSC’s Joe Bendoski won the men’s overall title with a time of 23:48.77.

Meanwhile at Indiana State, junior Jess Baumgartner just missed breaking SUU’s 8K school record and bested his previous personal-best time by 12 seconds by posting a time of 24:17 to place 41st-overall. Baumgartner’s time is also tops in the Mid-Con by 17 seconds, besting the league’s season-best mark previous held by his teammate, junior Mark Currell, who covered the course in 24:45.1 to place 81st. Freshman Rex Shields also raced to a PR with an 85th-place time of 24:46.6, followed by fellow freshman Adam McDonald in 129th at 25:05.3, and sophomore David Sheeran clocked a season-best time of 25:09.3 to finish 139th.
Seven nationally-ranked teams finished in the top-10 overall in the men’s “white” race, as fifth-ranked Iona outscored No. 3 Stanford, 100-106, to win the team title, while Liberty’s Josh McDougal posted a time of 23:14 in taking home the men’s crown. SUU tallied 470 points and finished ahead of teams from Liberty, Utah State, Cincinnati, New Mexico, Pittsburgh, Boston College, Purdue, Boise State and Colorado State, which is ranked ahead of SUU in the NCAA Mountain region rankings.
“All in all it was a great weekend for us across the board,” SUU Head Coach Eric Houle said. “[At Indiana State] Our team went out in the toughest meet in the country this weekend and really performed well. I was pleased with the times we posted and with the way we were able to run against some of the best teams in the country and not flinch.
“It also shows how strong we are on the men’s side that we were able to go out and win our home meet as well,” Houle continued. “Our times for both our men’s and women’s teams are improving each week and these performances will help set the stage for the [Mid-Con] conference championships in two weeks.”
Southern Utah will take next weekend to prepare for the 2006 Mid-Continent Conference Championships, hosted by UMKC, Saturday Oct. 28, in Kansas City, Mo. Last season, both Thunderbirds squads raced to runner-up team finishes at the Mid-Con meet held at Valparaiso.
