2007 Signees

THUNDERBIRDS SIGN FIVE FOR 2007 SEASON

CEDAR CITY, Utah – Feb. 7 – Southern Utah University women’s soccer head coach Brian Stock announced the additions of five athletes that will join the Thunderbirds on the pitch for the 2007 season.  The list includes four athletes from the state of Utah along with a signee from the state of California.

The list includes Allison Goettsche (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS), Kelsey Jensen (Farmington, Utah/Viewmont HS), Erin Marble (Bountiful, Utah/Bountiful HS), Jessica Rogers (Springville, Utah/Springville HS) and Alison Swan (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS).

“Overall, this is another tremendous class for SUU Soccer,” Stock said of the group of players.  “Athletically, this will be the best team we have ever had.   These players are all good soccer players and know how to succeed.”

“Most importantly,” Stock continued, “they compliment our returnees well and will be great representatives of this program and SUU.  We will have a lot of options come next fall and this class certainly moves us one step closer to reaching the Mid-Con title.”

The women’s soccer season will begin Monday, Sept. 5 with the Thunderbirds hosting Cal-State Bakersfield.

Player profiles:

Allison Goettsche, 5-9, D, Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS (Slammers 89 North)

Two-year varsity starter at Esperanza HS, a program that as been ranked as high as No. 3 in Orange County and No. 21 nationally … accumulated seven assists en route to the Aztecs’ Sunset League Championship as a junior … member of the Slammers 89 North club team that is ranked in the top-10 in Soccer America’s annual rankings of youth soccer programs

Coach Stock on Goettsche

“Allison is another great defender that we are adding to our roster.  She is hard working, fearless and has a great touch.  She anticipates the game very well and loves to get forward.”

Kelsey Jensen, 5-5, MF/D, Farmington, Utah/Viewmont HS (Utah Rush 89)

Three-year varsity starter for Viewmont HS … helped the Vikings to region championships in 2005 and 2006 … member of Viewmont’s 2006 team that advanced to the Utah 5A state semi-finals … named second-team all-Davis county in 2006 … member of Utah Rush 89 that finished as Utah State Cup runners-up in 2006 and semi-finalists in 2005 … member of the 2004 Utah ODP state team

Coach Stock on Jensen

“Kelsey is an extremely technical player.  She strikes the ball as clean as any player I have seen at this level and is a dangerous weapon from distance.  She is a fierce competitor and never shies away from a challenge.”

Erin Marble, 5-7, F/MF, Bountiful, Utah/Bountiful HS (Utah Rush 89)

Three-year varsity starter at Bountiful HS … tallied four goals and nine assists during the Braves 2006 Utah 4A state championship run … named All-State honorable mention in 2006 and second team all-Davis county … member of Bountiful’s state finals squad in 2005 … member of Utah Rush 89 that finished as Utah State Cup runners-up in 2006 and semi-finalists in 2005

Coach Stock on Marble

“The thing that impressed us most about Erin is her willingness to do whatever is necessary to create a scoring chance.  She’ll stick a tackle, layout for a header, or beat someone on the dribble.  She is someone who will cause problems for defenders.”

Jessica Rogers, 5-9, D, Springville, Utah/Springville HS (Celtic Storm 89)

Four-year varsity starter at Springville HS … named second team All-State in 2006 with three goals (two game-winning goals) and eight assists as the Red Devils advanced to the Utah 4A State playoffs … named all-region honorable mention in 2005 after scoring two game-winning goals and tallying nine assists … helped Springville to the Utah 4A State quarterfinals and a second-place finish in region during 2005 … named all-region honorable mention in 2004 as the Red Devils captured the region championship … helped Springville to a second-place finish in region during the 2003 season … part of the Celtic Storm club team that has advanced to the Utah State Cup quarterfinals in 2004-2006 … second leading scorer in U16 Premier division in 2005 … member of Utah ODP state pool team in 2002 and 2003

Coach Stock on Rogers

“Jessica is a dynamic presence in the middle of the field.  Technically she is very clean and possesses the ball well, but she can also get forward and cause problems in the attacking third.  She is also solid in the air and will battle for everything.”

Alison Swan, 5-11, D, Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS (Utah Avalanche 89)

Three-year starter and three-year varsity letter winner at Davis HS … named second team all-area in 2006 … helped the Darts to a Region 5 championship in 2005 and to the Utah 5A State semi-finals in 2004 … member of two-time Utah State Cup champions in 2004 and 2005 with the Utah Avalanche … also helped the Avalanche to the region IV semi-finals and a No. 19 national ranking … member of the 2002 and 2006 Utah ODP state team

Coach Stock on Swan

“Ali is a very well rounded defender.  She is dominant in the air, reads the game well and is composed on the ball.  She also has great presence on the backline.”
