Six Earn All-Mid-Con Recognition

Pratt Earns Her Second Mid-Con Player of the Year Honor

Marci PrattCEDAR CITY, Utah, May 10 – Southern Utah University shortstop Marci Pratt has been named this year’s Mid-Continent Conference Player of the Year and six Thunderbirds have been named to the conference’s All-Mid-Con squad.

Joining Pratt on the Mid-Con’s first team is freshman utility player Karli Jenson, while four players: 3B/SS Lindi Kennedy, 1B Bobbi Jo Merrill, OF Rodeo Carli and P Kristina Brooks earned second-team recognition.

For Pratt, a senior from Taylorsville, Utah (Taylorsville HS), it is her second straight Player of the Year honor from the Mid-Con. After leading the league in practically every statistical category last year, Pratt is again among the Mid-Con’s leaders in most statistical categories, including first in runs scored (45), triples (5), walks (36) and on-base percentage (.455). She is also among the league’s  leaders in batting, (.323), home runs (10), doubles (11), RBI (34), slugging (.647) and total bases (101).

Karli JensonJenson, a redshirt freshman from Cedar City (Cedar HS), played designated hitter, first base and third base for the Thunderbirds this year and wound up fourth on the team with a .317 batting average. She also scored 21 runs and knocked in 16 with four home runs, three doubles and two triples on the season.

Lindi KennedyKennedy, a junior from Las Vegas, Nev. (Cimarron Memorial HS/BYU) was relegated to second-team status in the voting conducted among the league’s coaches and sports information directors despite leading the Mid-Con in home runs (14), RBI (55), hits (63), slugging (.737) and total bases (123) and ranking second in batting average (.377), doubles (14) and on-base percentage (.453).

Bobbi Jo MerrillMerrill, a senior from Show Low, Ariz., is currently second in the Mid-Con and on the team in home runs (11) and RBI (38), and ranks third in slugging (.591) and total bases (94) in both the league and on the team. Merrill also ranks among the Mid-Con’s top-10 in runs scored (32) and hits (48).

Rodeo CarliCarli, a junior from Sandy, Utah (Alta HS), ranks among the conference’s top-10 in batting average (.329), hits (54), runs (29), triples (2), RBI (24), stolen bases (11-12), total bases (70), walks (22) and on-base percentage (.412).

Kristina BrooksBrooks, a freshman from Las Vegas (Desert Pines HS) was among the league’s top pitchers particularly in conference games, where she led the league in opponents’ batting average by holding opposing hitters to a .195 success rate. She also ranked third in wins (7-2), second in innings pitched (63.1), appearances (13) shutouts (3) and starts (9) as well as sixth in strikeouts (45) in league play.

“We’re happy to have so many players recognized,” SUU Coach Jodi Jackson said. “We’re a little disappointed we didn’t have more players on the first team but there were a lot of good players in the league this year. There are some good players who weren’t named to the all-conference team at all.”

Western Illinois took home the other major awards as sophomore Kamren Ferguson was named the Pitcher of the Year, Lauren Furgala was named the Freshman of the Year and head coach Holly Van Vlyman was selected as the Coach of the Year. The Leathernecks and Thunderbirds each placed six players on the All-Mid-Con squads, while Valparaiso had five players on the all-star teams and Oakland had three representatives.
