2006 Match ReviewsValpo Ends T-Birds’ Tennis SeasonVALPARAISO, Ind., April 28 – Defending champion Valparaiso University put an end to Southern Utah’s 2006 tennis season Friday morning, taking a 4-0 win over the Thunderbirds in the first round of the Mid-Continent Conference tournament. The Crusaders won two of three doubles matches to pick up the doubles point, then claimed wins at first, second and sixth singles to advance to the championship round for the third straight season. Valparaiso beat SUU for the conference championship last year. Liliana Cortes and Lelia Kanuha picked up the only win for the Thunderbirds on the day, taking an 8-2 win at first doubles over Rachel Janssen and Kim Sajevic. Valparaiso won the point, however, after Kate Evangelist and Whitney Chada defeated Veronica Cortes and Lisseth Hoyos, 8-4, at No. 2 and Jill Dierbert and Charmain Stanislaw edged Casie Brooks and Emmi Nelson, 8-6, at No. 3. Jansen got by Liliana Cortes 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while Dierberg beat Kanuha 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 and Sajevic ousted Brooks 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6. The other three singles matches were terminated after the outcome was determined, with Hoyos trailing Chada 7-5, 0-0 at No. 3; Veronica Cortes behind Evangelist 6-1, 2-1 at No. 4; and Nelson leading Stanislaw 6-3, 1-2 at No. 5. “I’m proud of the way the team played today,” SUU Coach Lenny Lee said. “We were close to winning the doubles point and had we done that who knows what might have happened in singles. We came out and we competed hard today though and that’s really all a coach can ask for or expect.” Southern Utah ended the season 7-10 after going 5-3 during the Mid-Con regular season. Valpariso, which improved to 14-7, advances to Saturday’s championship game against the winner of IUPUI and Oral Roberts, who play later today. SUU can clinch a tournament berth with another win in this week’s cluster, which is being hosted by Chicago State. The Thunderbirds, who moved to 3-2 in league play with the win, face 4-0 Valparaiso Saturday morning, then finish the weekend with matches against UMKC Saturday afternoon and Chicago State Sunday. UMKC and CSU were a combined 0-7 in league play entering the weekend. Centenary dropped to 2-4 in conference play. “This was a big win for us,” SUU Coach Lenny Lee said. “I’m really proud of the way the team played. We knew we had to win this match or Centenary would have the inside track to the fourth Mid-Con tournament berth. If we can take care of business [Saturday] and Sunday we’ll be in the tournament.” If SUU picks up one more win the worst it can do is tie Oakland at 4-4 in fourth place and the Thunderbirds hold the tie-breaker over the Grizzlies by virtue of a 4-3 win last weekend. SUU opened the match by winning the doubles point, with Liliana Cortes and Lilia Kanuha taking an 8-1 win over Heather Kelley and Christine Majchrowic at No. 1 and Cassie Brooks and Emmi Nelson taking an 8-5 win over Jenn Majchrowic and Kate Buchanan at No. 3.
