Valpo Edges Thunderbirds

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Valparaiso took wins at first through fourth singles Saturday to edge Southern Utah 4-3 and put the Thunderbirds’ post-season hopes in jeopardy. The match was the final in the SUU-hosted Las Vegas cluster.

Only four teams advance to the Mid-Con tourney and after a 1-3 finish this weekend SUU finished its Mid-Continent Conference season at 3-4 and in fifth place. With one weekend of conference play remaining SUU could still tie Western Illinois for fourth and still has a mathematical chance to advance but WIU would have to go without a win next week and have other factors work in the Thunderbirds’ favor.

Things started well for SUU on Saturday as Lelia Kanuha and Deena Jenson won at first doubles by an 8-6 count while Carmen Blanco and Shanna Docherty took an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles to claim the doubles point.

Valparaiso’s top four players rose to the occasion, however, as Rachel Janssen topped Blanco 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 and Kate Evangelist took a 6-0, 6-2 win over Kanuha at No. 2. VU’s Kim Sajevic took a 6-2, 6-1 win over Docherty and after Whitney Chada prevailed against Emmi Bulloch by a 6-1, 6-1 count the match was decided.

Southern Utah did get wins at No. 5 and 6, with Jenson beating Jenny Schwartz 10-7 in a super-tie breaker while Casie Brooks beat Lindsey Gustafson, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6.
