SUU Coach Lenny Lee

Lenny LeeLenny Lee is in his 14th season as head coach of the T-Bird women’s tennis program this year. Coach Lee has led the program since its inception in 1994. Last season, Lee guided SUU to a 7-9 regular-season record and a fourth-place finish in the Mid-Continent Conference (5-3).

Lee has compiled a career dual match record of 178-171 through 24 years of coaching, including a 39-28 Mid-Con mark. His teams have claimed six conference or district championships and over the past eight years his program has been one of the most successful at Southern Utah University.

Before coming to Cedar City, Lee spent two years as head men’s tennis coach at The College of New Jersey, where he guided CNJ to a 22-9 dual match record, claiming the New Jersey Athletic Conference championships in 1992 and 1993. The Lions achieved a number-two ranking in the Mid-Atlantic Region and were ranked in the top 25 nationally. Lee also served as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association East Region Awards Chair.

Prior to that Lee served six years as head men’s coach at Eastern University in St. Davids, Pa., and also worked as head women’s coach at Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell, Pa. for three seasons. He led Eastern University to conference and District 19 championships in 1990 and 1991, earning berths in the NAIA National Tennis Tournament. He was named the NAIA District 19 Coach of the Year in 1989, 1990 and 1991, while posting a 53-22 dual match record.
At Montgomery County CC, he took his teams to a 25-11 record and garnered runner-up spots in the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference Championships in 1989 and 1990.

Lee received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Temple University, graduating cum laude. He excelled in tennis and basketball at Thomas Edison HS and Peirce JC, in Philadelphia. While at Peirce, he was nominated as an Outstanding College Athlete of America by the Outstanding Americans Foundation.\

Since 1992, Lee has served as assistant director and master instructor at the Nike Stanford Tennis Camp in California, working with the top junior players in the United States. He has worked under the tutelage of nationally renowned Stanford University coaches John Whitlinger and Hall of Fame men’s coach, Dick Gould. Gould was twice named ITA Coach of the Decade, in the 1980’s and 90’s.
