Major Caldwell was born June 27, 1972 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  He moved to Utah in 1976 and attended schools in the Hunter and Farmington/Kaysville areas.  He moved to Cedar City, Utah at age 16 where he graduated from Cedar High School in 1990.  He joined the Utah Army National Guard at the age of 17 on November 29, 1989.  After completing Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion 222nd Field Artillery as a Forward Observer.  He served as a Forward Observer for six years prior to attending the Officer Candidate School (OCS) in 1995. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Field Artillery branch on June 9th, 1997 after graduating from OCS at the Utah Military Academy.  

Major Caldwell graduated from Southern Utah University in 1999 with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Engineering Technology.  He is also a graduate of the Primary Leadership Development Course, Field Artillery Officer Basic Course, Advanced Course, and Combined Arms and Services Staff School (CAS3). 

All of his prior military assignments have been held within the 2nd Battalion 222nd Field Artillery. His past assignments include Platoon Fire Direction Officer, Platoon Leader, Firing Battery Commander, Battalion Fire Direction Officer, Assistant Battalion S3 (Operations Officer), and Battalion S3.  His assignments during mobilizations and deployments include: Task Force Operations Officer during Operation Inner Flame in support of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah; Charlie Battery Commander during Operations Enduring Freedom and Noble Eagle (Mar 2003 – Aug 2003), where his unit was mobilized to support Operation Iraqi Freedom  but later redirected to Ft. Lewis, Washington in support of ROTC Cadet training; Assistant S3 during Operation Iraqi Freedom (Jan 2005 – Jun 2006) where his unit served in the Ramadi area of operations in support of the 2nd Marine Division and 2nd Brigade Combat Team 28th Infantry Division. He is currently assigned as an Assistant Professor of Military Science at Southern Utah University Army ROTC.  

Major Caldwell’s military awards and decorations include: The Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal (3), National Defense Service Medal (3), Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal (2), Overseas Reserve Training Ribbon, Non-Commissioned Officer Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M device (2), Utah Commendation Medal, Utah National Guard 2002 Olympic Winter Games Service Ribbon, Utah Achievement Ribbon (2), Utah Service Ribbon (3), and he was inducted into the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara.

Major Caldwell is married to Heidi Orton of Cedar City. They have three children: Austin, Jordan, and Jaycie.
