Derek Huff was born and raised in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. After he graduated from high school, he attended college and worked various jobs until he joined the US Army in 1996. After completing Infantry Basic Training and Basic Airborne School at Ft. Benning, GA, SFC Huff was assigned to the 82d Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, NC. He served as a rifleman, platoon radio operator, and as a squad leader. During his time in the 82d Airborne Division, he deployed to Egypt and Haiti in support of US peacekeeping operations. Following his deployment to Haiti, SFC Huff was accepted to serve with Special Operations Command in 2000. SFC Huff continued to support US interests in various regions around the world and spent time deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. SFC Huff was assigned to the Southern Utah University ROTC program in April of 2008. SFC Huff’s awards include the Bronze Star (with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster), Joint Service Achievement Medal, and Army Commendation Medal (with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters). |
