The Growth Function for Higman 3
Dr. Eric Freden and Jennifer Schofield, Southern Utah University
Wednesday, April 19th, 2006, 4pm in ELC 301
Abstract: In 1951 Graham Higman discovered the first non-hopfian group, which we call Higman 2. There is a Higman group (Higman n) for each positive integer n. We compute the explicit growth series of Higman 3 and in fact Higman n for all odd n. The methodology uses generating functions, recursions, analysis, and formal language theory.

The Annual Student/Faculty Scholarship Creativity Day is intended to encourage and promote scholarship and creativity among faculty and students. The conference honors and showcases the cooperative efforts between members of both groups to enhance academic, professional and personal growth. With this end in mind, students and faculty are given the opportunity to present their research and other examples of scholarship and creativity through various mediums. Faculty and students also attend workshops centered on the theme of promoting undergraduate scholarship and creativity.

Fast/Slow Diffusion
An Le, University of Utah
Monday, April 3, 2006, 3pm ELC 301
Abstract: We will begin by deriving the (classical) diffusion equation which leads to the study of the Laplacian operator. Next, we introduce the collapsing/growing sand piles problem and the mass transport problem which describe the phenomenon of fast/slow diffusion. Comparisons between linear eigenvalue problems and nonlinear eigenvalue problems will be addressed.
- Putnam Exam Results
Congratulations to the SUU Math Club's 2005 Putnam team for ranking 113th. There were 395 institutions with teams. Also congratulations to Vishal Lama, who ranked 324 out of the 3545 who participated, and Dustin Gerrard, who ranked 819. Great job to all six SUU students who took the test. Graduate school in math: Why, What, and How
Dr. Tyler Jarvis, Brigham Young University
Thursday, Febuary 16, 2006, 1-2pm in ELC 310
Abstract: I will talk about many things related to going to graduate school in mathematics and answer questions from the audience. Topics will include the benefits and challenges of graduate school, why and how much we pay you, why you shouldn't have to pay your own tuition, how to choose a graduate school, the things that graduate students say they wish they had known before they started, and what you need to do now to get ready.

TQFTs: Using pictures from physics to understand algebra
Dr. Tyler Jarvis, Brigham Young University
Thursday, Febuary 16, 2006, 11am-12pm in ELC 301
Abstract: I will talk about relations between surfaces and algebras. These relations originate in physics but require no physics to understand. These relationships yield all sorts of interesting new structure, including some interesting differential equations. And they give a nice way of thinking about algebra geometrically and geometry algebraically.
