- Sarah Brown presents research at math conference
Math faculty member Sarah Brown gave a presentation titled
Numerical Analysis for the Nonlocal Allen-Cahn Equation at the
2007 SIAM Conference on Analysis of Partial Differential Equations held in Mesa, Arizona, on December 10-12, 2007.
- Utah Conference on Undergraduate Research (UCUR)
Feb. 29, 2008, at Utah Valley State College
Undergraduates from all disciplines are invited to present their research at the conference. Applications to present are due November 26 (extended). Travel funding is available.
- Putnam Exam
The William Lowell Putnam Competition is a national contest for undergraduates. It will be administered to SUU students on Saturday, December 1, 2007. If you are interested in taking the exam, please contact Derek Hein at hein@suu.edu.

- Bioinformatics Team Competes in Boston
A group of SUU students competed in the 2007 International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition (iGEM) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston on November 3-4, 2007. Beginning last summer, the team used a kit of biological parts to build biological systems with the goal to operate them in living cells. Faculty members Colette Calmelet (math), Charlotte Pederson (biology), and Bruce Howard (chemistry) supervised the project. Well done!

- Majors Fair
The math department's display will be on the west side of the Sharwin Smith Center ballroom on Wednesday, October 31, 2007, from 11am to 3pm. Faculty and advisors will be available to answer any questions you may have about math and statistics related careers.
- Virginia Tech Regional Mathematics Contest
The 29th Annual Virginia Tech Regional Mathematics Contest will be held on Saturday October 27, 2007, from 8:30am to 11:30am in the ELC conference room (4th floor in the ELC). Students are welcome to take the contest exam. Donuts and beverages will be served.

The student senators have provided a box (brightly colored green! =-) to be placed in every CIET department office to collect students' comments/questions (anonymously if so desired) to be addressed/answered at Focus Day. The boxes will be taken to the Starlight Room before the event begins if students want to drop their comments/questions off then.

Guest Alisha McCann, Math Instruction Coordinator at SUU... and SUU graduate, will give a brief description of her research experience several years ago as a math major. Lynn White, Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Program Director, will also visit the seminar to share information and answer questions on the UGRASP program.

- SUU math students obtain summer internships
Last spring, faculty members Said Bahi and Jim Brandt supervised two mathematics students, Patrick Staley and Devin Wiggins, in a statistical project for a local company. Their initial work led to summer internships for both Patrick and Devin. Congratulations!
