- Derek Hein Presents at Conference
Math faculty Derek Hein gave a presentation titled On Sarvate-Beam Designs at the Midwest Conference on Combinatorics, Cryptography,
and Computing held in Las Vegas on October 22-24, 2008. This is joint work with undergraduate math students Bryan Bradford and James Pace.
Abstract:
A Sarvate-Beam design (V,B) is a set V of v elements and a collection B of subsets (called blocks) of V such that each distinct pair of elements in V occurs in a different number of blocks (in particular, exactly once from the list 1, 2, ... , nCr(v,2). In this talk, we present some results concerning SB triple systems, SB quad systems and strict aPBD designs.

Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008, at 4pm in ELC 312
Abstract
A new feature in Mathematica 6 is the Manipulate command which simplifies the creation of interactive classroom demonstrations. After illustrating some of the features and options of the Manipulate command, we will take a look at downloading and publishing demonstrations through the Wolfram website. Participants will also have an opportunity to experiment with creating interactive content in one of the computer classrooms.

Refreshments will be served.
Abstract:
WECCO is a local company that manufactures ammonium perchlorate, an oxidizer used in solid rocket fuel. During the past two summers, mathematics students have worked as interns at WECCO investigating factors involved in the lifetime of the anodes used in the production of ammonium perchlorate. After giving an overview of the production process, we will discuss some of the statistical results of this collaboration between faculty, students, and WECCO employees.
