Secondary Education Licensure Program (SELCT)   [ 30 credits ]

Courses should be taken in the following sequence:

Submisison of Admission Documentation:

1. Candidates desiring admission to SUU's Graduate Studies in Education M.Ed. Program  must complete the Online Version    and pay the $50.00 non-refundable application fee. PLEASE indicate in "Intended academic plan in which you want to study:  GELP SEC ED LICENSURE
2. SUBMIT ALL THE FOLLOWING IN ONE PACKAGE. (All application materials must be submitted in their entirety by the deadline dates. Candidates who do not submit all the required documentation by the deadline date will not be processed for admission into the program for that semester. All letters must be originals, no copies, faxes, or e-mails accepted.)

• A handwritten statement expressing (1) reasons the applicant wants to be admitted to the Graduate Educator Licensure Program seeking educational licensure and (2) why the applicant believes he/she can succeed in the program.
• Verification of a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
• Official transcript of all undergraduate and graduate studies. Transcripts must verify a minimum GPA of 3.25 on the last 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of approved undergraduate/graduate coursework.

A combination of minimum GPA 3.00 - 3.24 on the last 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of approved undergraduate/graduate coursework and comparative scores on the Miller's Analogies Test (MAT) or the Verbal, Quanititative, and Analytical portions fo the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) as listed in the chart below.

• Three (3) letters of recommendation from individuals who know you well (not family) in support of your plans to become a licensed teacher.
• Submit a wallet size photograph.

Additional Admission Requirements: 

•   ALL applicants must attend a mandatory Graduate Studies Program Orientation before being officially admitted and taking classes.     Contact Debi Smith at smithd@suu.edu  or 435-865-8383  to reserve your seat for orientation.
• ALL applicants must take the Praxis Content Knowledge  Test in the Major  Area of Bachelor Degree and pass it before being officially admitted and taking classes. .  Bachelor Degrees accepted for GELP Secondary Licensure and Praxis Test Codes/Passing Score: Biology (0235 / 160); Chemistry (0245 / 164) ; English (0041 / 168); French (0173 / 181); German (0181 / 153); Mathematics (0061 / 138); Physical Education (0091); Physical Science (0481 / 164); Social Science (0081 / 159); Spanish (0191 / 161).  Submit scores to SUU (A4092 school code) and USOE (R8375 state code).
•   ALL applicants must submit to the SUU department major area of emphasis a "Secondary Licensure Major Area of Study Affirmation" and BA/BS transcript to verify all classes have been completed for licensure before being officially admitted and taking classes.
• ALL applicants must successfully complete a criminal background check approved by the State of Utah before being officially admitted and taking classes..   

General Information:

1. The GELP program must be completed within six years of continuous enrollment from the date of matriculation.
2. Students will be required to attend one summer session of on campus classes.
3. Upon admission all graduate students must maintain a 3.0 GPA. If a student's GPA falls below 3.0, the student will be revoked from the program and must submit a Student Appeals Application to seek readmission.
4. If a student misses more than two consecutive semesters, excluding summer session, the student must apply for readmission and is subject to the current catalog requirements.
