Four Goals of the Graduate Studies in Education Program

The Graduate Studies in Education Program in the College of Education at Southern Utah University has the following 4 goals:

1. To provide a rigorous, cutting edge graduate course of study that  leads to a Master’s of Education degree.
   • 5 Areas of Emphasis -        
     1. Educational Leadership -  42 credit hours
     2. Reading - 20-29 credit hours
     3. Technology - 18 credit hours
     4. English as a Second Language ( ESL ) - 18 credit hours.
     5. Mathematics (K-6 & Level II) - 18-21 credit hours   Available ONLY through SUU/School District Professional Development Cohort Program
2. To provide licensure  options for educators (Graduate Educator  Licensure Program) that leads to advanced certification and licensure.
   • 7 Areas of Licensure / Certification
     1. Elementary Education  License  - 45 credit hour program
     2. Secondary Education License -  30 credit hour program
     3. Special Education/Mild-Moderate License - 36 credit hour program - Teaching License required.
     4. Special Education Alternative License  (S.E.A.L.) - 30 credit hour program
     5. Educational Leadership Utah Administrative / Supervisory License – 33 credit hour program - Teaching License and Master Degree required.
     6. Reading Endorsement / Specialist - 20-29 credit hour program - Teaching License required
     7. English as a Second Language ( ESL) Endorsement - 18 credit hour program - Teaching License required
3. To provide high quality graduate coursework for educators to promote  Professional Development, Relicensure options, and meet the needs of school districts in facilitating  local, state, and national initiatives.
   • Examples include:
     1. Nevada  Regional Professional Development Program
     2. The Utah Rural Schools Conference
     3. The SUU Reading Conference
     4. The SUU Early Childhood Conference
     5. The SUU Cedar Mountain Science Center Program
     6. School/District Professional Development Workshops
     7. Summer Institutes and Specialty Programs
4. To provide a flexible, innovative, and visionary approach to Graduate Studies that is student centered and responsive to the changing needs of  professional educator audiences, and the school districts which they serve in Utah and  the Nation.
