Professional Education Unit

Mission

The mission of the Professional Education Unit at Southern Utah University is to direct the operation of a coherent teacher education program to produce teachers who possess the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to positively impact learning for all students in diverse classroom environments. The Unit seeks through its mission to empower teachers and their students by enabling them to construct knowledge and acquire the skills and dispositions necessary to assume control over their lives. This mission calls us, as a Unit, to assist our candidates in understanding that, as members of a community of learners, they have a responsibility to relate to others in supportive and helpful ways that celebrate diversity and address common needs and aspirations.

Consistent with this mission and the mission of the University at large is our Unit's theme: "Head, Hand, and Heart: Empowering Teachers and Students To Make Learning Live Forever." Also consistent is the aim of the Unit which is to facilitate lifelong learning and growth for all teachers and students through individual empowerment, inter-connectivity and social change. Our Unit's vision of being recognized as the premier teacher education institution in Utah and of establishing a regional reputation for developing high quality teachers who can facilitate lifelong learning and positive change within diverse student populations and learning environments represents a professional commitment to this aim.
