PECC MEETING
October 15, 2003
ATTENDING: Jean
Adams, Dr. Bruce Barker, Dr. Jerry Bowler, Dr. Kay Cook, Dr. Kathy Croxall, Dr.
Kate Grandison, Dr. Deb Hill, Dr. Prent Klag, Dr. Marty Larkin, Dr. Mike
McGarvey, Shauna Mendini, Dr. Lee Montgomery.
- Lee provided an update on NCATE accreditation
status. The NCATE Unit Board
meets October 24-26. Formal
notice to SUU of full accreditation is expected shortly after the October
meeting dates.
- Lee announced that review by USOE of state programs
(eg., dance, FCS, Business Ed., etc.) have been posted to the PEU web
site. All programs were
approved with some recommendations offered in almost every area. Copies of the USOE reviews were
also given to each of the Deans.
SUU has until late May to provide formal responses on each program
to USOE. According to Gayle
Johnson, responses need not exceed 2 pages.
- Bruce outlined current USOE interpretation of Federal
NCLB legislation. For
secondary education, all students are considered ÒHighly Qualified
TeachersÓ in the area of their teaching major. Per USOE HOUSS Rules, in order for candidates to be
ÒHighly Qualified TeachersÓ in their teaching minor area, they must pass a
Praxis Content exam. Cut
scores have yet to be set by USOE.
- Based on discussion of 120 degree content the
following items were discussed.
- SUU Secondary Pedagogy is 39-40 sch. By comparison, USU is 35 sch,
WSU, 34 sch
- College of Education has been charged by Provost to
reduce requirements to be more in harmony with USU & WSU.
- Bruce shared several documents with PECC members
a)
Comparison of secondary pedagogy between USU, WSU, & SUU
b)
A suggested outline of courses to be reduced in Secondary
Education and in content areas.
Specifically Secondary Education will give up Ð 6 sch with suggestion
that content area reduce student teaching from 5 to 3 sch and those programs
with 3 sch in the content methods reduce to 2 sch.
c)
A list showing number of licenses given in each of the
secondary content areas over the past 3 years.
- Some thoughts expressed regarding the 120 sch
construct included: instead of 7 hours of student teaching & 3 hours
of content, would rather it be ½ and ½. Content area needs more not
education. Also, no one is
within hours, especially with minors.
Next meeting Ð 19 November 2003
