PECC Meeting Minutes

November 19, 2003

 

 

ATTENDING:  Jean Adams, Verlinda Angell, Bruce Barker, Jerry Bowler, Arlene Braithwaite, Kathy Croxall, Merlene Ellington, Kate Grandison, Deb Hill, Wayne Hinton, Prent Klag, Marty Larkin, Mike McGarvey, Virginia Stitt

 

  1. Bruce provided update on Lee MontgomeryÕs health status.

 

  1. Approval of minutes from last meeting:  Wayne Hinton motioned for approval of last PECC Meeting minutes.  Seconded by Jerry Bowler, opposed none.  Approved

 

  1. Deb talked briefly about trip to D.C. with focus on visit to NCATE offices.

 

  1. Bruce talked about NCATEÕs formal notification of accreditation approved October 31, 2003.

 

  1. Bruce made a clarification regarding Item #3 on the PECC Meeting minutes from October 15, 2003.  Each state was required by the U.S. Department of Education to provide a local (State) definition for ÒHighly Qualified Teachers,Ó in response to ÒNo Child Left Behind.Ó  You can be ÒHighly QualifiedÓ in a minor provided you pass the PRAXIS content exam.  No cut scores have yet been determined.

 

  1. Bruce talked about 120 hour construct for a degree program Ð spreadsheet

Action recommended:

This model has been approved by the Teacher Education Departments

 

  1. General Ed. proposal for EDUC 2000, ÒExploring EducationÓ course to be proposed in the interdisciplinary category Ð 3 sch.   COE would count General Ed. among the gen. ed. requirements.  SCED 4520 practicum would front end the student teaching semester.

Verlinda Angell moved to propose Teacher Education model - excluding action- Department 4900 courses.  Seconded: Wayne Hinton -unanimously approved

 

9.                  Jerry Bowler discussed and presented curriculum change proposals as follows:

á             ELED 3530 Instructional Planning, Delivery, and Assessment for Elementary Teachers- Changed to ELED 3555 and ELED 3550 Curriculum Development and Improvement for Elementary Teachers Ð Changed to ELED 3535.  Motion to accept: Prent Klag, seconded:  Deb Hill  - unanimously approved

á             PE 4900 Methods for Teaching Secondary PE Ð Changed from 3 hours to 2 hours. Motion to accept:  Verlinda Angell, seconded:  Wayne Hinton Ðunanimously approved

á             SCED 3720 Content Literacy Ð Changed from 3 hours to 2 hours.  Motion to accept:  Wayne Hinton, seconded: Deb Hill  -unanimously approved

á             SCED 3550 Curriculum Development and Improvement for Secondary Teachers Ð Delete Course, SCED 3570 (Classroom Management) & SCED 3590 (Instructional Design) to incorporate TWS information from 3550 into these courses.  Motion to accept:  Verlinda Angell, seconded: Kathy Croxall    -unanimously approved

á             SPED 2030 Foundations of Special Education Ð Changed to SPED 3030.  Motion to accept:  Virginia Stitt, seconded:  -unanimously approved

á             SPED 4130 Curriculum Strategies Ð Changed from 4 hours to 3 hours and SPED 4170 Advanced Teaching Strategies Ð Changed from 2 hours to 3 hours.  Motion to accept:  Wayne Hinton, seconded:  Kate Grandison  -unanimously approved

á             SPED 4180 Elementary Practicum & SPED 4181 Secondary Practicum Ð Delete Course to 2 hour course to be made into one 3 hour course (SPED 4185) and SPED 4185 Elementary and Secondary Practicum.   Motion to accept:  Wayne Hinton, seconded:  Deb Hill  -unanimously approved

á             EDUC 3200 Educational Psychology - Delete Course, ELED 3250 Educational Psychology for Elementary Teachers Ð Create new course, and SCED 3250 Educational Psychology for Secondary Teachers Ð Create new course.  Motion to accept:  Merlene Ellington, seconded:  Wayne Hinton  -unanimously approved

á             Dept. 4980 Clinical Practice Ð Changed from 5 hours to 2 hours.  Motion to accept:  Verlinda Angell, seconded:  Wayne Hinton -approved.   The motion to approve on a vote of 7 in favor, 5 opposed.  Concern was expressed by Kate Grandison that workload expectations would likely not change even though credit hours for content departments would be reduced from 5 to 2 sch.  The feeling was also aired that there should be equity between content departments and Teacher Education on the extent of semester hour cuts among pedagogy courses in response to 120 construct mandate.

á             EDUC 2020 Foundations of Teaching K-12 Ð Delete course and proposed to EDUC 2000 Exploring Education (An Interdisciplinary General Education Course).  Motion to accept:  Deb Hill, seconded:  Kate Grandison   -motion passed with 1 disenting vote.

 

10.              Mike McGarvey proposed creation of a Technology Education track within the SUU MED degree.  Motion to accept:  Deb Hill, seconded:  Kate Grandison   - unanimously approved

 

11.              Verlinda Angell Ð Regarding EDRG 4040 Reading Minor Capstone Ð Proposing changing 4050 to 4055 Ð no new course.  Motion to accept:  Verlinda Angell, seconded:  Kate Grandison  -unanimously approved

 

Kate Grandison and Jean Adams need copy of USOE accreditation report.
