Presents Festival of Excellence Concert:
An Evening Baroque Music & Dance,
April 9, 2013
Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: Combine the talents of music ensembles and dancers from the College of Performing and Visual Arts and you get a remarkable evening of harmonious music and movement presented as part of the Festival of Excellence at Southern Utah University. An Evening of Baroque Music & Dance will feature SUU’s String, Woodwind and Piano Ensembles as well as dancers from SUU’s Department of Theatre Arts & Dance. The performance will take place on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at 7:30pm in the intimate Thorley Recital Hall within SUU’s Music Building. Admission is free, and all are encouraged to attend.
The evening’s performance will feature music from French Baroque composers Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687) and Louis Couperin (ca. 1626-1661), Classical composer Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), and Romantic composer Franz Schubert (1797-1828). From Jean-Baptiste Lully, the Ensembles will perform excerpts from Phaëton, a tragédie en musiqueincluding Overture: Gay - Lentement, Prelude de Triton: Vite, Rondeau, Prelude, Le printemps, Second Air - Chorus, Petit Air pour le Egyptiens ("L'ete"), Bourree pour les Memes, Menuet, Marche, and Chaconne. From Louis Couperin, Eric Freden, Associate Dean of The College of Science and Engineering, will perform Suite in D including Unmeasured Prelude, Allemande, Courante I & II, Sarabande I & II, Canaries, Pastoral, Gavotte, and Chaconne on the harpsichord. From Franz Joseph Haydn, the String Ensemble will perform Four Movements: Minuet, Andantino, Scherzo, and Rondo all arranged by Charles Woodhouse. From Franz Schubert, the String Ensemble will perform Adagio from String Quartet, Op. 125 No.1 with Zheng Guo conducting.
The String Ensemble is directed by Xun Sun and features Ariel Jensen, Katherine Lee, Clara (Jiabao) Li, Taylor Stewart, and Xun Sun on violin; Tyler Baker, Mandy Minkler, and Alexis Richards on viola; and Michael Wager on cello. The Woodwind Ensemble is directed by Dr. Virginia Stitt and features Tanisa Crosby and Chealsie Draper on flute; Heidi Eden on oboe; YuYuan Fuh, Kortne Pedersen, April Richardson, and McKenna Terry on clarinet; and Benjamin Bradshaw and Jaynie Connor on bassoon. The Piano Ensemble is directed by Dr. Christian Bohnenstengel and features Sasha Bainson, YuYuan Fuh, Catherine Gardner, Rashelle Jensen, Jackie Joseph, Kendra Leavitt, Jacob Lee, and Ye Zi. The dancers are directed and choreographed by Shauna Mendini, Dean of the College of Performing & Visual Arts. The dance ensemble includes Dalton Burr, Cameo Coburn, Abby Hall, Jana Kim, Justine Layton, Emily O’Donnell and Taylor Steinbeck.Experience an evening of exceptional talent from some of the best musicians and dancers that Southern Utah University has to offer.
