Pianist Dr. Willem Van Schalkwyk in Recital

Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: SUU’s Department of Music celebrates 2014 by showcasing the artistry of pianist Dr. Willem van Schalkwyk in a special recital. An accomplished master of the keyboard, van Schalkwyk performs a program of glorious classics sure to please music lovers of all tastes. Presented by the Department of Music, the recital starts at 7:30pm on Tuesday, January 21, 2014, in the Thorley Recital Hall within SUU’s Music Building. The performance is free and open to the public.
For his recital, Dr. Van Schalkwyk has selected a special program from the classic repertoire for piano. Performance highlights include Joseph Haydn’s Sonata in A flat Major, Hob XVI:46, Johannes Brahms’ Variations on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24, Franz Liszt’s Années de Pèlerinage: Sonetto del Petrarca 104, Sonetto del Petrarca 123 and Frédéric Chopin’s Ballade No. 4 in F Minor, Op. 52.
Namibian pianist Dr. Willem van Schalkwyk made his debut at age fourteen with Mozart’s Concerto in A major, K. 488, and by the time he was sixteen he won his first international piano competition in France. After high school he was awarded a full music and academic scholarship to attend Brigham Young University. Upon the completion of his Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance at Brigham Young University, Dr. Van Schalkwyk commenced his graduate studies at the University of North Texas. During this period he performed numerous solo recitals in the USA, Namibia, and South Africa, and also performed in collaboration with faculty, guest artists, and other students at the university. In 2005 he was the recipient of the Audience Prize at the Louisiana International Piano Competition, and the following year he was the winner of the Scionti Piano Competition. He graduated from the University of North Texas with his Doctorate in Piano Performance in August 2009. Concert highlights in recent years include performing Mozart’s Concertos for Two and Three pianos with colleagues from Southern Utah University, and playing Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto with the Namibia National Symphony Orchestra in 2013.
As collaborative artist Dr. Willem van Schalkwyk has performed with instrumentalists from the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the Utah Symphony and the University of North Texas faculty, and with South African singers Gretel Coetzee and Minette du Toit-Pearce. As a vocal coach and pianist he has served on the music staff of the Santa Fe Opera, the American Institute of Musical Studies’ summer program for singers in Graz, Austria, the Utah Opera, Arizona Opera, and the Opera in the Ozarks. Willem is currently an instructor and collaborative pianist at Southern Utah University.
