Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: A native of Tokyo, Japan, Ryoichi Suzuki has been sculpting in the United States since the early 1980s. His sculptures, which utilize stone, wood and bronze, are collected and exhibited all over the world. SUU is thrilled to exhibit his work in the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery and host his presentation as part of its Art Insights series. Suzuki’s Art Insights presentation will take place at SUU’s Sterling R. Church Auditorium in the Sharwan Smith Center at 7:00pm on March 6, 2014. A selection of his sculptures are on exhibit in SUU’s Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery now through March 8, 2014, noon–7pm. Both events are free of charge and the public is encouraged to attend.

Ryoichi Suzuki is a member of both the National Sculpture Society and the Royal British Society of Sculptors. His work has recently been exhibited in Tokyo, Italy, Japan, and throughout the western United States. Suzuki notes that there is a “calm immediacy” to his work that invites “viewers to explore and ponder” his “varied use of media, usually focusing on stone, wood, and bronze.” These unique elements of his work have led to gallery affiliations in Utah, Colorado, and Italy, as well as a variety of visiting artist positions and guest lecturing opportunities internationally. Suzuki is currently an assistant professor of sculpture at Utah State University, where he received a Master of Fine Art in Sculpture in 1987, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting in 1981.

Suzuki is “inspired by the flowing energies of being, nature, and the human body,” and this is evident in the breathtaking work currently on display at SUU. His abstract forms take on the shape of the human torso, water, wind, clouds, and the various currents of life and landscape. His works seem to spring organically from these natural subjects, and feature a unique harmony with many different features of our daily lives.

Art Insights is a weekly program hosted during the fall and spring semesters by SUU’s Art and Design faculty. Students and community members meet to experience presentations and discussions by visiting artists and art educators from around the nation who share their work and insights and attend gallery openings. Admission is free, and the general public is invited to attend.

Please join us and enjoy this chance to experience the work and wisdom of one of Utah’s foremost sculptors. For more information on the SUU College of Performing and Visual Arts events, please visit www.suu.edu/pva/arts.
