“An introductory chemistry course designed for students in
engineering, physical science, pre- medical, pre-dental, pre-pharmacy,
or pre-veterinary medicine. For all students who need more than one year of chemistry. Prerequisite: Two years of high school algebra or Math 1050, or high school chemistry. Four lectures per week. Corequisite: CHEM 1215

We will meet at 8:00 AM, Monday through Thursday of each week for lecture. Each Friday, there will be a problem-solving exam, which starts at 8:00 AM and ends at 10:00 AM. During Chemistry 1210 we will cover Chapters 1-10, and Chemistry 1220, Chapters 11, 13-17, and 19-21. It will be necessary to move along at a rapid pace, which requires students to read ahead in the textbook.GRADING: Examinations will be given on the dates indicated below. All examination dates are Fridays. Each exam is worth 100 points.
EXAM I May 30th EXAM I July 11th
EXAM II June 6th EXAM II July 18th
EXAM III June 13th EXAM III July 25th
EXAM IV June 20th EXAM IV August 1st
EXAM V June 27th EXAM V August 6th
ACS FINAL EXAM July 1st ACS FINAL EXAM August 8th
Exams will be multiple choice, true false, matching, and problem solving. Problems will be similar in form and style to assigned homework problems. All exams will be closed book, and must be completed during the specified time-period. The final exam will be the American Chemical Society (ACS) standardized exam for General Chemistry. Every student who completes General Chemistry at SUU is required to take this exam. For the purpose of calculating grades, the normalized ACS exam scores will be adjusted to make them more representative of previous exams. If a student scores above his/her course average on the ACS exam, the higher score will be used to determine the course grade. The ACS exam can both help and hurt a student’s grade.
Homework will be assigned daily. The homework will be worth approximately 20% of the final grade. Homework will consist of problems from the text and ChemSkill Builder assignments. Students who score 85% or better on homework assignments will receive all of the points possible. Homework is normally due during the class period after it is assigned. Homework may be handed in without penalty by 1:00 PM on the day that it is due. Late homework may be submitted within 24 hours of its due date for 67% of the credit earned. After 24 hours, homework will NOT be accepted. You must complete all homework assignments to compete (or survive) in this class!
GRADING SUMMARY CHEMISTRY 1210:
EXAMS 600 POINTS
HOMEWORK 150 POINTS
TOTAL 750 POINTS
GRADING SUMMARY CHEMISTRY 1220:
EXAMS 600 POINTS
HOMEWORK 150 POINTS
TOTAL 750 POINTS
There will be no adjustment (curve) of exam scores. Final grades will be calculated by comparing achieved to possible points according the following grading scale:
100–90% A 73%–67% C
89–87% A– 66–64% D+
86–84% B+ 63–60% D
83–80% B 59%–57% D–
79–77% B– Below 56% F
76–74% C+
Students occasionally find themselves faced with the inevitability of a poor grade at some point in the semester. When this happens they usually inquire about the possibility of extra credit. It is the official policy of this class that there will be NO EXTRA CREDIT. Any attempt to give additional grading opportunities to certain individuals is unfair to the rest of the class, and rewards those who have not been successful in doing what is required of everyone else.
The use of pencils for all work in this class is STRONGLY encouraged. Mechanical pencils are highly desirable. Scientific calculators capable of exponential notation and logarithms are necessary.
Information contained in this syllabus other than grading, late assignments, makeup work, and attendance policies, may be subject to change with advance notice, as deemed appropriate by the instructor.
