CJ 4200 – Ethical Issues --  MidTerm Exam Part 2 – Fall 2009

 

Select 9 out of the following 12 problems and write a complete answer. The answers must include appropriate reference and support material. A grading rubric for this assignment is attached.

 

  1. Explain the difference between meta-ethics and normative ethics.
  2. Explain how applied ethics is used in the criminal justice system.
  3. Explain how values might be different between a police officer, prosecutor, and judge.
  4. What is the difference between duties and superogatories?
  5. Define regulations, standards and guidelines. What is the difference in punishments for a violation of these rules and the punishments for lawbreaking?
  6. Describe two teleological ethical systems found in the criminal justice system.
  7. Contrast the ethics of care and utilitarianism.
  8. Explain the differences between situations ethics and relativism.
  9. Using the concepts of Egoism write an essay on how you can write an internal policy on hiring practices for your agency.  Be sure to analyze the potential impact of an Egoistic attitude about your agency as related to incoming candidates. 
  10. If you were to design a study to test the ethics of police what ethical issues would you choose, what ethical theories would you be testing, and how would you prepare the study/survey to measure these issues? 
  11. Plato associated status with justice; explain how this works and how it may apply in the modern criminal justice system.
  12. Discuss the difference between substantive justice and procedural justice.
