Text :     Elementary Differential Equations, 9th ed., by Boyce and DiPrima.

               ISBN-13: 978-0470404041

Prerequisites: Calculus II with at least a C and 2270 (Linear Algebra—may be a co-requisite with permission). For success in this course, the main requirement is ability to do integration.

Course Description: Linear and nonlinear differential equations and linear systems of equations with applications; emphasizes understanding of the solution as well as the techniques used.

Objectives:

  • Learn techniques to solve the first order and the second order differential equations.
  • Write and use ordinary differential equations to solve application problems
  • Learn how to use Laplace transform to solve the initial value problems.
  • Learn techniques to solve systems of first order linear equations.

Homework: Homework assignments are listed on the next pages of this syllabus. I will collect weekly assignments on the following Tuesday.  Late unexcused homework will not be accepted.

Grading:                Homework:     50 points (5 pts each, lowest 2 assignments

Attendance:   Students are expected to attend all class meetings and are responsible for

all of the material covered.  Students who miss a class meeting should copy a classmate’s

notes for that meeting. Also, there will be no “make–up” exams and quizzes. Unless a

valid excuse is presented in advance, a missed exam will receive the score 0.    Students

must look at this syllabus carefully and plan well ahead.

University Policies: Scholastic dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent. You are expected to have read and understood the current issue of the student handbook (published by Student Services) regarding student responsibilities and rights, and the intellectual property policy, for information about procedures and about what constitutes acceptable on-campus behavior.

Students with medical, psychological, learning or other disabilities desiring academic adjustments, accommodations or auxiliary aids will need to contact the Southern Utah University Coordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD), in Room 206F of the Sharwan Smith Center or phone (435) 865-8022. SSD determines eligibility for and authorizes the provision of services.

In case of emergency, the University's Emergency Notification System (ENS) will be

activated. Students are encouraged to maintain updated contact information using the link

on the homepage of the mySUU portal.  In addition, students are encouraged to

familiarize themselves with the Emergency Response Protocols posted in each classroom.
