Definition of Text Charting:

The purpose of this lesson is to define and teach text charting. Text Charting is a method that forces students to read beyond one sentence to gather all the information contained in a paragraph. The students must read each sentence in a paragraph and determine what information is added to the “big picture.”

Joey Walked slowly past the store. It was cold and windy that afternoon, and he had forgotten to wear his jacket. He stopped and looked in the window of the sporting goods store, staring at the new leather NFL jackets that were on display. Suddenly he had an idea!

He walked into the store and asked the owner if he could try on one of the jackets he saw in the window. The owner agreed and Joey quickly chose the bright green and yellow one he had been admiring. While Joey was admiring himself in the mirror, the owner moved to another part of the store to assist another customer. “This is my chance,” thought Joey.

He bolted for the door, setting off a noisy anti-theft alarm as he passed through it. He ran quickly out the door and turned to his right. Then it happened. Joey slipped on a patch of ice on the sidewalk and fell sharply to the ground.

As he gathered himself to get up, he saw a pair of shiny black shoes standing near his head. As he looked at the shoes, somewhat dazed, and began moving his eyes up the blue trousers rising above them, he knew his luck had run out. He has slipped and fallen directly in the path of Officer Mulcahey, the biggest, meanest cop on the beat. His heart sank.
