Self-Monitoring
Through Imaging and Interacting
Step
by Step:
1. Review the Imaging and Interaction Process
2. Discussing Imaging as a Self Monitoring
Strategy
v
Give
examples of inaccuracies that might result from misinterpretation of the text.
v
Here
is an example: “Historians say the American Revolution had three firebrands:
Samuel Adams, Patrick Henry, and Thomas Paine.”
3. Identifying Logical Checkpoints
v
The
students need to understand that the need to stop and create images may occur
after a single word, a sentence, a paragraph or even a whole page.
v
There
is no set formula for determining these imaging points. This is decided by the reader for their own need
for clarification and comprehension.
4. Practicing and Discussing the Strategy
v
The
teacher needs to direct the student to read text silently and mark their individual
imaging points in the text.
v
Encourage
the students to share their selection of imaging points and to discuss the
reasons they marked those particular points.
