Predicting:

Using Past Experiences To Support Comprehension

--Utah State Core; Second Grade; Standard 1; Objective 1:  Assimilate new ideas introduced through pictures and print.

--Predicting is speculating what will happen next in text and increases reading comprehension.  Good readers create specific predictions when reading is built on life experiences or past reading experiences.

Steps in Teaching Prediction:

--Predictions help bring past experiences to mind

         --Prediction gives purpose to reading

--Prediction helps in thinking of all the possibilities of things that might                    occur

--After learning about prediction, it becomes something that is done almost                       unconsciously

--Teacher reads book aloud, guides students in making predictions, and adds                          predictions if necessary

--Give students Post-it® tabs to write their predictions on

--One color for predictions made, a second for check stops, and a third for                           prediction changes

--Discuss the kinds of predictions that can be made and how past                                experiences come into play
