Authentic Writing Ideas


á      Have the students look at a pattern (ABAABBAAABBBÉ) and write a paragraph about what is happening in the pattern.  Also, have the students make up their own pattern and write about what they have constructed.  (Mathematics 2nd Grade, Standard 2: Objective 1)

 

 

á      Have the students read a book about different shapes (ex.  The Greedy Triangle).  After they have read the book, have the students summarize the book.  Make sure that they talk about the geometric shapes that are described in the book.  (Mathematics 2nd Grade, Standard 3: Objective 1)

 

 

á      Have the students read the nursery rhyme of the man who went to St. Ives.

As I was on my way to St. Ives, I met a man with seven wives. 

Each wife had seven sacs.  Each sac had seven cats.  Each cat

Had seven kits.  Kits, cats, sacs, and wives.  How many went to

á      If you were going on a trip for nine days and you needed nine different outfits.  How many pairs of pants would you need and how many shirts would you need?  How many total pieces of clothing would you need?
