Reading Manipulatives

First Grade

 Build a Story

Each student will have a pocket sheet, and a set of cards.

The cards will have words and punctuation marks on them.  The students slide the cards into the pockets and make a story or a few short sentences.  Then the students pass their sheets around and read each othersص stories/sentences.

After this, you can use the pocket sheets and words cards for many other things as your lesson plans require.  Use your imagination!

Another idea is to find or create a story.  Print each page on one side of a sheet of paper.  The students will have plastic sheet protectors.  The pages will be mixed up and the students will need to read them and decide what order they go in.  Then the students will put the pages in the sheet protectors and read the story again all of the way through to make sure they got it all correct.  You could also give each student a different story and have them check each other.  It would be a good idea to include a cover, title page, copyright page, etc.  This will help them understand the parts of a book.
