Fluency Strategies

In this activity the student will be able to choose from any reading material they would like to.  The teacher will pair students up so that they are grouped by ability. The teacher will then make a copy of it for a student who is paired up with the other student.  The student will read the passage as fast as he can while the other student follows along on the copy and marks any word that their partner skips or reads incorrectly.  Then the two students will switch places so that each of them will have a turn reading and correcting.  By being in both positions the student will be able to increase their fluency with speed and accuracy.  By seeing their partners miss words will help them recognize the accuracy and become more aware of it.

The teacher will have a copy of the same passage on tornados for each student at their desk.  The teacher will be walking around the room to monitor the students. The teacher will have a timer in their hand and will time the class in reading.  The timer will be set for forty seconds and when it goes off the students must stop reading aloud and mark with a pencil where they were.  Any student that beats their time from the previous day will be able to go to recess two minutes earlier than the rest of the class.  If there are any students caught cheating they will stay in two minutes later than the rest of the class.
