This interactive bulletin board corresponds with the Utah
State Core Curriculum for Third Grade, Standard 6 and Standard 8: Vocabulary-Students
learn and use grade level vocabulary to increase understanding and read fluently;
and Writing-Students write daily to communicate effectively for a variety of
purposes and audiences.
This
interactive bulletin board incorporates the ideas of the theme unit (birds),
building vocabulary, and learning word forms to assist them in their
writing.
On
the bulletin board, create a map with four stops.
At
each stop, place an envelope. On a
table nearby, place small bird cutouts, large enough for one word, and a
writing utensil.
Create
a large bird that can travel from station to station. The bird is traveling home to her babies, but she must stop
at each station. Each station
contains a question. Students
answer the question with the appropriate word and write the answer on a small
cutout, which they then place in the envelope. The questions help students identify parts of speech. The questions are:
Each
day six students will answer all four questions and place their answers in the
envelope. During language arts
time, the teacher will show the words in each envelope. In their journal, students write a
short paragraph using one of the words chosen for each category. This builds vocabulary and teaches
students the function and form of words in sentences. This bulletin board would be easy to use for other language
arts activities just by changing the questions.
