Four Authentic Assignments

1. M&M Candies- The students will sort their bowl of M&M’s into colors, then for each color they will write out both longhand and numerically the fraction that represents how many M&M’s are in each color.

2. Grocery List-The students will write up a list of things (a recipe) that they need to make the M&M cookies. They will then predict how much of each ingredient they will need to buy and how much they will spend in order to make the cookies for the entire class.

3. Hershey Fractions-The students will problem solve on how to divide up the bar evenly among their group members. Student should write their responses on paper so that understanding of fractions can be checked.

4. Newsletter-The students will create a page to be added in the newsletter that will show how they are using fractions in the classroom and how they will be able to apply it in real life.
