Comprehension Strategies
Standard 1
Students will acquire number sense and perform operations with whole numbers and simple fractions.
Objective 3
Model and illustrate meanings of the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division and describe how they relate.
- Model multiplication and division of a one-digit factor by a one-digit factor using various methods
Strategy One:
Materials:
Flashcards shaped and colored like pizzas (one or more set(s) for each student). These flashcards can be made by the students or teacher, and should have at least ten cards (more is better) in each set.
Procedures:
- Give each students at least one set of flashcards
- Have the students write one multiplication problem on each card (problem on front, answer on back). These problems can either be teacher assigned, or the students can pick the ten they are most struggling with.
- Have the students go through their flashcards several times a day, with partners, alone, and at home.
Strategy Two:
Materials:
Large Pizza shaped cutouts (One for each student)
Small, nickel or quarter sized pepperoni cutouts (at least 50 for each student)
Procedures:
- This activity is designed to help students master their “multiplication families”. Write a small digit multiplication problem on the board (ex: 3x4, 3x5, 2x6, etc.)
- Have the students take their pepperonis manipulate them on their pizza cutout to illustrate the answer. (ex: 2x6=12; they can arrange their pepperonis in two rows of six, or in six rows of two to show that the answer is twelve.)
- Continue with several more problems. (However, make sure that the answer is never more that the number of pepperonis each student has.)
Strategy Three:
Materials:
Recipe for Pizza Dough (make sure that all measurements are whole numbers- one cup, 2 tsp., etc.- does not have to be real recipe.)
Procedures:
- Give each student a copy of the pizza dough recipe. Tell them that the recipe is for one pizza, but we need two pizzas. They are to double (times by 2) all of the ingredients in the recipe. This strategy helps them to see how they will use multiplication in everyday life.
Standard 1
Students will acquire number sense and perform operations with whole numbers and simple fractions.
Objective 2
Identify relationships among whole numbers
- Compare whole numbers up to four digits using the symbols <, >, and =.
Strategy Four:
Materials:
Have several pizza cards for each student with various numbers of toppings on them, or with three to four digit numbers written on them.
Pizzas with <,>, and = on them.
Procedures:
- Have the students place two numbered pizzas by side.
- Have them place the correct sign (either an <, > or an =) between the two pizzas, and then continue with all of the pizza cards.
