Environmental Print for Third Grade Math
We will be creating a
grocery store and a bank inside the grocery store for our center.
Therefore, for our environmental print, the students will be asked to bring to
class grocery ads, bank advertising, and print displaying fractions.
Examples shown to the students would be newspapers showing the current rate for
loans, car ads showing the current percents of car loans, usually represented
in a fraction. Other examples could be ads with butter for sale, 1Ú4 of
butter for .99 cents or pies cut into fractions. We would also ask
students to bring to class objects such as measuring cups to figure out 1Ú2 cup
of peanuts purchased from the store or packs of butter representing 1 lb and
then broken into fractions we could show 1Ú2 pounds of butter or 3Ú4 of a pound
of butter. Encourage students to bring whatever they can find from home
showing fractions in print.
