Fluency Strategies for Juan Bobo

  1. Have the students read the book Juan Bobo goes to work.  Read them the book at a fast, slow, and medium pace in that order.  Then you explain that the normal speed at which you normally read to comprehend what it was you just read.  You then explain to the students that if you are reading a book that has a foreign language or a English usage that you are not familiar with that you may have to read the book at a little slower pace in order to understand what it is that you have just read.

  1. You have the students learn a little Spanish.  What you need to do is help the students understand a little bit of how Spanish is written.  Because in Spanish you write a sentence that when translated to English will not look like it would if you were to write it in English first.  For example: ÒMuchas gracias, senor.Ó When translated straight to English means very much Thank you, sir.  In English however we say Thank you very much, sir.  This is where fluency in a different language or at least an understanding of the other language and how it works.
