Center:

Shoebox Observatory-

Divide the class into groups of five students. At each center we will have the following materials: various sized styrofoam balls, paint and paintbrushes, string, black construction paper, pushpins, glue, and a shoebox.

Directions:

Have each group design a solar system within the shoebox with the given materials.

-Line the inside of the box with black construction paper.

-Using the pushpins, create holes in top and sides of the box. (This creates stars.)

-Paint the styrofoam balls. Be creative.

-Attach string to the styrofoam balls using the glue. Glue other side of the string to the top of the

box so that planets are hanging down.

-Display these universe boxes around the room.
